it works the other way around with condensation

you treat the cause of the condenstaion first and then the damp and mold will dry out by itself

you can then brush it off and there are paints you can use to treat the wall

The walls been treated twice with stuff we bought from b&q in a 5ltr container and then repainted over some days later. The room gets plenty of ventilation we open the windows regularly all over the house.
Its mystery to me as i know very little about these things but i appreciate everyones advice and opinion.
 
Open a window every once in a while.

It wont matter how much or how often you paint or seal. If its condensation you need air


I can get it tested for you( the mould). but it'll cost. Not much but there is a cost involved
 
Damp for sure, what landlords and cheap DIY men do to this is basicly a temp fix, Clean the wall and replace the wall paper and or paint it, vent the room job done and last like you say about 6 to 8 weeks.....

The best way to fix this is first find the cause, either leaky roof, roof join, pipe work or leaky walls via cracks in the pointing, even the smallest of cracks lets water in it freezes in winter making the crack bigger until there's enough water to soak into the brick/stone, work.

once the cause has been fixed you can start to fix the damp patch itself, firstly sorry the wallpaper has to go rip it off and clean the wall with an muldew cleaner, also looking at the pic the skirting board looks suspect, pull it off and take a look if the wood is rotton.

Buy, borrow or rent a Dehumidifier place it near the wall and leave running for about 3 days emptying the water it collects often, in the meantime you will most likley need to also take down the plaster off the wall and get it back to the brickwork, this again will need tobe cleaned and dryed out then treated with damp proofing agent or even paint, re - plasterd then the plaster treated with the same stuff then either painted with at least 2 base coats then an over coat or wall papered again....

Leave a window in the room on vent for the rest of the year, see how it goes..... ok you should not have to pay for this Mr Landlord should but ya chances are slim. either tell him to sort it or you will hire a pro to do it for you and then deduct the cost from his rent.
You do know ya can do this.

I have had problems with my landlord I had an issue in the house and I rang and rang him no answer left message after message, emailed him a few times no reply went round to his house not in, I found out he was on his Jollys for 3 weeks..... So i got a pro in to do the job paid him out of the rent money and what was left transferd to my landloards bank and then sent him a strong letter inc a copy of the bill informing him what i had done and he was not over happy but he agreed with him not being around there was not much else i could have done. in your case you can even stop the rent payment until the issue is resolved once and for all and you know what it would take a lot for him to try and claim that money back off you
 
Definitely don't spend much time in that room with that mould on there. We had bad mould last year in a rented property and it gave all three of us health issues. It's dangerous stuff.

If the landlord won't do anything about it then you could try contacting the council's housing department. They can put pressure/bring action against private landlords too.

looks like leaking something? pipe, drain maybe.
get it sorted, it's his responsibility
 
Do you dry clothes on your radiators? Is the bathroom properly ventilated, do you open the window after a shower?

We use a tumble dryer or the line if the weathers nice. never ever use radiators to dry clothing. Bathroom is 27 feet away from this room? That has an extractor fan and the window is left open regularly.

Looking up at the guttering and facia boards from outside the house they look like they have come away slightly and are out of shape by the looks of them.

Move out, that will make you ill.

We quite literally did in our old house. Similar to the OP. Landlord kept making excuses so we did move out, couldn't be doing with that with children in the house. Well...with anyone in the house to be fair. We cleaned it and it also kept coming back. We had it in lounge and both bedrooms which is why he said it was a condensation issue. Yet our house now doesn't have an extractor fan in the bathroom and we probably abuse it just the same with drying washing and yet we have none of the problems so it was something to do with the other house. The areas we got it in on the old house were walls exposed to the outside. The bits of the house where they were up against an internal wall of the adjacent terraced houses were ok. So maybe it was bad insulation and the walls got cold. Don't know. Awful for your health. Demand landlord sorts it immediately and move out till he does in temp accomodation like a friends if possible.

Damp, condensation, fungus, it dosen't matter what you call it it's dangerous. Speak to the HSE and see what the advise.

I contacted him last week saying i wasnt happy about it coming back all the time and he kept saying "trust me its just condensation, nothing to worry about".
This morning my wife was home and had a visit from a guy from EASA, apparantly they specialise in government grants for insulating houses. He explained what they want to do which was pump insultion into the back walls of the house and re-insulate the loft. He also explained that he had received a call from our landlord last week asking him to call over, now the interesting part is the guy from this company is now asking for my wifes national insurance number etc. He cant even do anything about the front wall where this dampness is coming through.
My wife has refused to give him any details until we know whats going on with this front wall.

Getting annoyed about this to be honest :mad:
 
This stuff is dangerous, get your landlord to fix this stuff ASAP. I heard many stories that people develop cancers and all nasty things with this crap in their homes.
 
My parents house had a similar thing to you OP. Upstairs bedroom and looked exactly like in the picture.

We were at the end of a terrace so the wall outside was exposed to the weather. In the end we had the walls filled with something (not sure exactly what) and we haven't had mold since.
