Hello

Currently in the process of pricing up a new system and Im wondering which Ram I should be buying.

Will be an i7 with the UD5 Mobo for gaming/Minor editing.

What should I be buying, 4Gb or 8GB? Dominator GT/Xms3/Vengeance?

Appreciate your input.

If it's just for gaming and minor editing then 4Gb is more than enough and the XMS3 is great value.

As an aside - considering your intended usage have you considered getting an i5 2500K system instead - you would be unlikely to see any performance difference and you would save a lot of money? You could put any 'considerable' savings towards a better gfx card which would benefit games far more.

Yeh I was thinking about go down to an i5 but dont know what else to put the money towards to. Already have a gtx480 so dont think I really need a new gfx card. Could always save the rest of the money but where's the fun in that :p

Also what cas speeds and Mhz should i be looking for?

It comes down to budget really and whether you think the premium price for tighter timings is worth it? (plus the physical profile of the memory if you have an awkward HSF.)

Personally, i think the 12800 XMS3 or the G.Skill memory is perfect for your build and requirements.

EDIT see above post

Also if you went down the i5 route you could save ~£170 (MB and CPU saving if you bought an MSI). You could consider SLi?..

Ive seen some XMS3 Classic 12800 with CAS speeds of 7-8-7-20 1.65v, do these sound ok?

Also seen some Dominator 12800 with CAS speed of 8-8-8-24 1.65v at roughly same price.

I prefer looks of the dominator but should i still stick with the XMS3?

Thanks again.

Was thinking of SLI but I would probably need a better PSU mines a corsair 750w atm Im guessing I would need a better one.

You wont notice the difference in CAS at all so it's just down to price and aesthetics.

The dominators are great - just be aware that they have a large profile and may get in the way of the HSF.

I was thinking of getting the Venomous X Black edition and doing a Push pull wit it, reckon this would be ok?

480's in SLi i think you need 800/850W to be safe - some would say more.

I know rjkoneill (builds/specs OCuK machines) runs has his 480SLI on a HX850W.

It will depend on the MB you decide on - with some boards the dominators may be a problem. But you could always raise the fan a fraction, nearest the memory, to compensate

Pretty set on the gigabyte ud5 board. had a look and I think It will be ok if not like you say can just raise the fan slightly.

Thanks for you help :D

NP - sounds like a monster rig, should be an exciting build.

I'm all for getting the best spec you can afford as it's always a buzz - but i would seriously consider the 2500K.

Try a spec me thread in the GH forum they may convince you as the figures for performance and price really do stack up in favour of the i5 for your usage.

But if you just want the best and you can afford it go with what makes you happy... :)

I fully agree with you and your help has been great but Id just like to know ive got the power there if I need it. Starting a few computer courses this year so not sure what Programmes I will need as some is editing and dont want it to slow down. it probably wouldnt even on the 2500k, but ill getthe 2600k to be safe!

Thinking of ordering sometime this week so will get pictures of the build!

With your 'belt and braces' approach (with knobs on) I suspect you'll be sticking in 8Gb of memory in too then? ;)

What case is this all going in and what clock are you hoping to get - 4.6GHz+?

To be honest at the moment I would be happy with 4gb but I know when t comes to placing the order It might get bumped upto 8Gb :p

I would be happy just getting 4.6ghz, not going for anyrhing crazy just nice stable speed. Just still debating what CPU cooler to get, I like the Venomous X (Black) but I know ones like the Noctua and Silver arrow get better temps but i think they look ugly as hell and this is my first build thats gonna look half decent.

Its all going in a HAF X, dont want to go into water cooling so though this would be a niec air cooled case.

The Silver Arrow really is a cracking cooler - and from reviews and user feedback virtually silent operation.

But the Venomous X Black edition will be more than capable of clocking the 2600K to 4.6GHz+ - especially with a push/pull setup - so i wouldn't worry about your choice in cooler. (Black to match the UD5?).

That is one aggressive looking case you would probably like the Silverstone RV02 Raven 2 too - link

EDIT: and a lot of the Antec range.

Yeh I think if I ever wanted to go over 4.6Ghz I would definitely swap the venomous X out for a Silver Arrow. Went with Black edition as the theme is going to be Black and Blue I think. Motherboard is Black, Case is black, Braided cables are black. I'm switched the red fans out to some blue ones instead as I much prefer blue.

It was actually between the RV02, Antec 1200 and the HAF X in the end but after a lot of searching I think the majority of people prefer the HAF X. I personally like cases suchas the 800D with the minimalistic look but there no good for air cooling. As long as the HAF does its job of good airflow and keeping things cool I will be happy, just switching the red fans out with blue like i said to make it abit more bearable.

I like minimalist cases too (Silverstone and Lian LI for me) - if you prefer the RV02 cooling woud not be an issue. You could actually sway towards an astehetic choice here as there will be very little in it cooling wise.

I'm not trying to change your choice as case design is a very personal choice (no one else's opinion matters when it comes to personal preference in looks) - but if you preferred the RV02's simpler lines then i wouldn't rule it out over marginal cooling comparisons to the HAF X (plus it would fit the black theme very nicely - after all it has RAVEN in the title ;)).
