New BMW 3 Series 'Performance Edition'

Why? It's not like they're Ferrari, specialising almost purely in raw performance-orientated cars, despite what BMW owners may believe about their own marque. They're everyman spiv-mobiles like Audi. 'Optimistic' badging is part of the game.

I think the name itself is a step too far this time. Performance Edition? On a 116i?

I mean really? It's the worst performing car they make.

Olympic Edition? Fine. But Performance Edition?

They should wait to see the sales figures before deciding whether to be delighted or embarassed.

This.

People forget, BMW never have been, and never will be, a performance car specialist.

They are a slightly upmarket everyman car specialist, who happens to have a decent 'hot' devision in M.

Naturally they are feeding the M branding down into the normal car range, but its getting to the point now that the M branding doesnt actually mean anything.

One for Fox, do you know the sales figures of true M cars (M3, M5, etc) compared to M Sport branded ones, particularly those as the bottom of the range? Are we at the stage where M means 'bodykits and funky steering wheels' rather than 'motorsport derived'? A bit like Gordini is now to Renault (nothing more than blue paint and white stripes :()

I don't get it either. But then what do we know? Something must have got lost in translation... That's the only explanation!

I don't know anybody that considers a base 1.6 with some goodies "performance". Ahh well these will probably sell like hotcakes though and for the people that don't buy? Well we get the chance to wind up the office idiot.... "So that was a performance edition BMW you bought was it?"

I think some of you are going too deep and missing the point. It isn't about this sort of car sullying some sort of performance car image. There has been a x16i in the range since before most of us were born.

It's about coming out with a range called 'Performance Edition' and offernig it only with base specification and the lowest performing car in each range. It's just hopelessly ironic.

It doesnt matter that it's BMW, the point would have been exactly the same if it was Volkswagen, Ford or Kia.

It's the whole 'Pick lowest performing car you make, use it as basis for 'Performance Edition' model'.

So, let me get this right.

This is a bog standard lowest spec model, with a body kit, M Sport wheel, and some stickers?

All things that can be retro fitted to existing models.

Anyone else think BMW have a lot of unsold base spec chassis lying around they need shot of?

ah yes, but this is a Fox BMW thread so needs to be trolled at every available opportunity.

It just happens to be BMW because they are the sponsor of the 2012 Olympics. I'd have posted the same thread if it was Ford with a new range of Ford Focus 1.4 Performance Edition's. Becuase it's the word Performance coupled with the lowest engine that is what I'm highlighting.

?

I think trying to troll Fox in a BMW thread is like trying to troll Brian Cox in a thread about the universe. You are going to loose.

But if you want a try, knock yourself out, I need a laugh.

Perhaps you could Wikipedia some BMW specs up, just in case...

Not just that (and I have not seen the sales figures to back it up) but I'd hazard a guess that it's exactly what people want, all the looks without the price tag. It will really impress the neighbours if you have a Performance Edition.

I felt this way when the Evo 8 260 was announced.

But even so, at least that was still relatively good.

schoolboy error

You used the word BMW in the thread title. Had you titled the thread "pointless special editions" and sighted the BMW as an example the trolls would have stayed away.

Then we could all have chipped in with some equally pointless special editions.

Like the vauxhall corsa GTI

http://www.vauxhallspecialeditions.co.uk/corsa-sxi-gti.php

available with a massively powerful 1.2 or 1.4 engine.

It is of course a 1.2 sxi with the VXR bodypack stuck on and some decals :p

Dressing up a base model isn't really the issue because it's a necessary evil. 'Halo' cars help sell cooking models, its a concept that has been around for years. People buying S-Line 2.0TDI A4s and M Sport 320Ds is what puts money in the development fund to build M3s and RS4s, and sales reps thinking that the diesel saloon on the company car list sort of looks like the £60k+ super saloon that was on Top Gear last night, so they order that one and the cycle continues.

It is just that calling them 'Performance' editions just stinks of marketing rubbish. Don't get me wrong, they'll sell, and they'll probably sell well, but that says more about the society than anything else :(.

A neighbour has one of those Corsa dressed up things, I was like ooo what have they been buying? Then saw the 1.2 badge and had a little smirk to myself.

On the other hand the fiancee loves the thing lol.

I know that smirk all too well! Doesn't go down with non-enthusiasts though lol. :o

Make base model look like a fast car = sell like hot cakes.

People get a car which looks nice, and is cheaper to insure than a powerful version.

the french did it best

with the Peugeot 106 Quicksilver that had the GTI bodykit, and the Citroen Saxo Furio that had the VTR/ VTS arch extensions and skirts etc..
