New BMW 3 Series 'Performance Edition'

1. Why have BMW decided to call these cars Performance Editions when they are far from performance orientated?

2. Why have BMW elected only to offer the Performance Edition with the lowest engine choice in each respective model range, especially given the name of the model?

3. Why didn't BMW actually make any changes to the engine/brakes/suspension/aerodynamics to satisfy the "Performance Edition" marque?

All questions are same ball park :D - but I get the point...

I'll ask this week and get back to you..

The answer to all of these questions is - to try and make more margin from each vehicle. There are different measures of performance. Heili Gabresalasee (sp?) has a **** 0-60, but can go miles on one tank. Such diversity encompasses the spirit of the Olympic games. Lawl.

Robbie, nobody is asking 'why do they exist' more 'why the name Performance Edition'.

To show the world that the German sense of humour is up there with the best of them.

Or because they think the sales from the people attracted to the sassy name will outweigh the negative impact of the ridicule from enthusiasts, especially since most enthusiasts will want BMW to sell loads so they can make better cars in future.

To show the world that the German sense of humour is up there with the best of them, they release a "Performance" variant that due to the weight of the add on tat is slower than the standard example....

Bloody Krauts.

God damn EU and/or hippies with their ruining of everyones fun.

Without hippies or Christians we would be living in space already.

I don't see how this is any different to the usual "sport" BMW's? They are all like this. The only genuinely sporty ones are the M series and maybe this 335i people go on about.

I'd expect this from the usual white goods manufacturers, Ford, Vauxhall ect but not from BMW.

Would the average BMW customer fall for this though?

The word 'Performance' has direct and clear meaning, 'Sport' is far more blurry marketing speak.

Performance could mean "performs well in C02 and MPG"

Sport equals used in sports, no one in their right mind would drive a 5 series sportily if offered a choice of cars.

BMW playing to their target audience again ?? Shocking ? No

Didnt the cancel the "new" CSL to build the X6 or such likes?

Are they releasing this across Europe or just the UK? Wouldnt surprise me if it was just here

What? BMW customers include some of the most... er, aspirational out there. No marque gets more badges stuck where they dont belong than BMW. Surprising number of dull sounding Ms and Alpinas round here, if you get what I mean ;). A cheap base model with an aspirational name and superficial bits stuck on it that allow them to more closely associate themselves with the higher end models is gonna sell bucket loads. It's what's on the outside that matters, right? :)

Youre wearing your rose tinted OCUK-Motors/BMW glasses again...

BMW are shockingly bad for this, dare I say moreso than any other mainstream manufacturer ??

And the "average" BMW customer these days would appear to be very much someone who wants a sporty looking 318d..

This thread is about the name rather than the looks. The looks are nothing new - we've had slow sporty looking BMW's since the E36 318iS..
