(vw enthusiasts) would you pay £6k for this?

I do find it interesting how this is usually the first question anyone asks about a car. Not sure I'll ever understand why.

It basically translates to 'Nice car, hope you've not driven it much' given the lower the mileage the more favourable the subsequent response will be.

How strange.

i asked because of the op really. mileage is an important factor but there's nothing stopping a car getting a nasty bit of cosmetic body damage on it with 10k on it than there is 110k the odds are just obviously in the favour of the lower mileage. bottom line is though that cars are meant to be driven but the lower mileage on older cars like this is a massive bonus.

It was completely original when he bought it. Even down to running in sticker on original unlaminated windscreen etc

i like the pastel colour but if i'd have found a stock one, i'd have kept it stock. with all due respect there are an awful lot of modified golf's, sticking to oe would've been a better way to stand out imo of course

It's only wheels and suspension - easily reverted back to std! Colour etc is all stock!

wow

there's a j registration citi golf by me that is in that colour and i thought it was a special edition paint only used on those models, didn't know they'd been using it since the 70's!

I'd be more impressed if it had done 300k miles and was in that condition.

Edit: The car in the OP, not yours Skalaberg.

lol its ok mate no worries... compared to modern cars its a pile of dog doo... but for some reason when I bring him out (only once or twice a week now) I just get a huge smile on my face.. go figure.

FFFFUUUUUUUUU

at no point in the rev range does the 8v gti produce more torque than its 16v sibling,

this is a pile of poo put forward by those that cant afford/insure a 16v

Really? Interesting. When I was a teen and these cars were all the rage, I remember reading endless reports about how the 8v was smoother at its power delivery with better low down torque.

This was true of almost any 8v/16v comparison of the era.

At no point does the 16v have less torque than the 8v. The same crap is spouted by some Saxo VTR owners also!

Pretty close though, perhaps that is what all the fuss was about. Back in the day, 16v meant top end rather than grunt.

EDIT: Ahh, yes, I remember the details now. It was something along the lines of pre 1988 8v cars had Jetronic Fuel Injection and 1988 < this was swapped to VWs own fuel injection system somewhat toning down the 8v so it didn't beat/match the 16v.

I'll see if I can find something to support that though.

And also against the 205 Mi16 conversions vs original 1.9 Gti

I think you should buy the golf and whack viper stripes on it :D

Just kidding, I would never consider buying it at £6000 and don't think anybody else should either

Early models were mechanical K-Jet, later ones were what VW called "Digifant" which is essentially Bosch L-Jet.

Digis feel flat (IMO) compared to K-Jet cars.

If I was going to buy a hot hatch of that era, I'd rather have this and 3k in my pocket

Me too. Although an ex GF had a H reg 16V Golf and at the time I had a Nissan GTIR. The Golf was probably the nicer car to drive. That had done 130K and was very fresh inside - the engine let go within a week and the dealer she bouht it from replaced the engine (new from VW)

VAG Scene tax at the greatest height for the lolacopter!

Pug 205's in that kind of mileage are even worse. Theres one on pistonheads for 12k which imo makes it priceless. As spending 1k on a average 205 then chucking 11k is going to have better results.

AE86's have a huge tax on them as well but at least it's got the light weight RWD coupe thing going for it.

Silly money, but at the end of the day a car is only 'worth' what somebody will pay for it, and somebody will probably pay that. Would I? Not a chance in hell.

The MK2 Golf market is all over the place though, there doesn't seem to be any consistency in the money they go for. If I were to put mine up for sale tomorrow I'd try my luck at £3k :D
