Hey all,

First off, please keep medical advice out of this thread. Thanks :)

Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea takes a conical shape, distorting the vision perceived through each eye. Due to its nature, it can not be corrected by glasses or eye surgery. Its currently affects about 1 in 1000 people and is more common in those that have down-syndrome.

I'm just wondering if anyone else out there suffers this condition? I was diagnosed a few years ago when i noticed a slight double vision in a single eye. At the time I wasn't referred to get contacts made up as it was in its early stages and not affecting my day to day vision (could still read opticians charts perfectly well). Now however, it is in both eyes. Particularly bad in my right one. It still doesn't really affect me when i have both eyes open (brain probably compensates and corrects) but with one eye closed it is noticeable, especially in high contrast scenarios.

As it gets worse I'm having to think about going back to the opticians to get some rigid contact lenses fitted but I am reluctant as i fear i won't get on with contacts. I hate the idea of touching my eye and get squeemish when i see people touch theirs.

Who else suffers this annoying condition, what stage has it progressed to and how do you correct it (if at all). I'm also interested in peoples opinions as to how it comes about, as research is currently inconclusive. Some studies suggest it has a genetic trait though no-one in my family has had it.

An ex-boss of mine had this and was told that contacts were required to correct it, they also were extremely squeamish about the idea of wearing contacts and anything touching their eye. So far they've not tried the contacts but as far as I understand it the condition will only get worse if no action is taken so it's probably a good idea to try and work round your fear.

I'm afraid that's about the limits of my knowledge though, good luck in getting it sorted.

My brother has it, it sounds awful! One thing mentioned which probably didn't help was that he used to rub his eyes loads due to allergies, I'm not sure how much this affected him getting it though.

He now has the expensive rigid contacts.

Sorry to hear about the condition, don't have much to say about it I'm afraid. What I can say though is that I've just recently started using contacts, coming from glasses. I never really considered them up till now, but after just a couple of weeks using them, I can easily take them in and out, no issues at all. It is tricky to begin with, but you get used to it surprisingly quickly. Especially with a condition like this, don't let it be the only thing stopping you from correcting it. Good luck:)
