Microsoft buys Skype ...

No other reason i can think of, but for 5billion (or whatever the figure is) I'm sure they could develop a far better tailor made solution for a half of that!

Thats a crazy amount of money!

thats what i was thinking

surely they could have made their own solution for cheaper

In the mad world of super-corps, it isn't that much money. I know, it sounds crazy but the money isn't that large. :(

Kinda awesome if you ask me. MSN messenger was always kinda pants for the webcam side of things, Skype/MSN integration, with Xbox 360 and future console possibilities?! Yes please

Skype on 360, Via headset and Kinect. Kinda awesome

Yes but then they would have 0 users from the beginning. Skybe already has a MASSIVE user base and already a HUGE amount of revenue coming in.

This isn't just buying any old company. They've bought THE biggest internet telephony company. It's also about competition. Now they don't have any serious competition.

Why take on the competition when you can buy it!

If integrated well into its family of products it'll do well. Live is too....complicated for a lot of users I think thats why the A/V function doesn't get used much perhaps this might replace MSN messenger?

The smartphone/voip market will be worth an immense amount in 10 years time.

Even Google who already have google voice put in a hefty bid.

Microsoft and Google are increasingly competing in the same spaces. Will be very interesting to see who wins.

^This basically sums it up. There is very little competition to Skype that I know of, so MS have become the masters of consumer VoIP/video conferencing overnight.

Their phone OSs always seem to be a bit of a flop and I'm sure they'd like their consoles to do better, and this is something they can use to push them by integrating it tightly.

I still think though that they've paid way over the odds. They are paying more than 3 times what eBay paid for it 5 years ago. Has it tripled in value? I don't think so! Despite being a very old service, it has never made serious money.

It will make serious money as more and more businesses opt for VoIP solutions.

Trust me, in 5-10 years time, people will be scoffing at the idea of an analogue solution. :p And MS will be rolling in their profit, if I were in the same position, I would.
