BMW 530dGT (F07)

I've seen plenty, so I'm a bit puzzled about the rare comments.

probably a combination of me living on the roads and the GT being so damn ugly you can't really miss it.
Here they're rare. Probably because they're all 3.0 (apart from the 550i) so everyone gets a 520d F10. Of which they are lots and lots.
Although it looks awesome in Touring M Sport guise.

I'll get some pictures up at the weekend, I think the GT looks fantastic.

Never driven one but had a long look over one in the showroom, very nice inside actually, comfy and roomy even for someone my size. I quite like its presence/stance as well but I'm not sure about why they only put 4 seats in it initially and the fifth they have added (I think it's still just an optional extra) is more of a shelf than anything. Still, I have to say I quite like the looks.

The interior is very nice. It's a fantastic place to be, especially with the comfort seats and panoramic roof.

4 seats is an optional extra. The 5 seats is like in any other car, with a bench. Although they still slide back and forth individually and you can adjust the backrest of both seats.

On my way to Birmingham in it at the moment (stopped for coffee).
I'm still not liking the ride. It's very fidgety.

One thing that amazes me though, it's 2011 and BMW are still fitting cars with navigation systems that can't do 7 digit postcode lookup. They really need to shape up with that.
The nav is beautiful with it's satellite imagery and terrain view but without proper postcode entry I'd rather use Navigon on my phone.

Stereo is crap too. As is rear visibility due to the tiny rear screen aperture.

All in all, so far I think it's a crap car to be honest.

I really, really don't understand this. Seems completely stupid to me, makes using it a PITA. I know most of their new cars sat nav have this feature, but why not this one, totally bizarre.

I'm of the opinion that why would any half modern sat nav not have this feature!!

This bugs me. Why are BMW spending so much money developing pointless cars like the 5GT, the X6, and the 4 series/3GT instead of concentrating on offering better quality on the core products?

I'd much prefer 7 digit postcodes and better reliability with fuelpumps/swirlflaps/injectors/etc.

No different to Audi or Merc of course, but it still bugs me. *grumbles*

Don't Royal Fail own the rights to 7 digit post codes? I guess it just isn't finacially viable as most people don't spec NAV

The F10 can be very fidgity too, especially if it doesn't have Dynamic Drive. How big are the wheels on yours? Does that one even have any spec at all?
BMW stereos are always crap unless you've got the Professional ProLogic one.

Lack of rear visibility is irrelevant when you've got the reversing camera, and as for the navigation, that doesn't bother me as I'm not in the UK but I can see how it's bloody annoying. Are there any OEM Navs that have this feature?

FWIW, I think if you didn't have a **** spec, bottom-of-the-range model you'd like it a lot more.
I can't help but feel that a fair few of your dislikes are BMW-specific rather than model-specific.

But nearly ever other sat nav has it though.....TomTom/Garmin have had it for years!

Errr you what?

I believe Royal Mail own the rights to Post Codes, so if you want the database for 7 digit searching you need $$$, and that $$$ obviously isn't worth it to BMW to include in their NAV, probably due to not every single car they sell having NAV specced as a £2k option or whatever it is.

Or they do it for the ****s n' giggles.

The majority of F07, F10 and F11 are specified with nav so its not true to say that its because not many people spec nav.

I didn't specify a BMW model, how many people spec NAV in the BMW lineup as a whole now and over the previous 5-6 years?

I have to admit, as much of annoyance as it is, it really makes little difference to me, and I drive most lengths of the country to different places.

The last two digits are still not fully unique to an address. I know the road name, I know the number and I know the first 5 digits. The BMW nav has never let me down.

Surely we are talking about the current generation of nav systems? The CIC iDrive system, with it's completely new satnav has only been around since late 2008, Pretty meaningless to state 'loads of people buy a 1 Series with no nav which is why the 5 Series doesnt have postcode lookup'.

It's £2000 a go - this easily covers the costs of such a thing. They choose not to, but not because they dont sell enough. Infact the whole thing is pretty odd really.

I wonder if the royalties are a percentage of the cost of a unit, rather than a fixed cost?

Therefore providing a £99 Tomtom with full postcodes costs less than doing the same on a £2000 navigiation system (Or even the value of the entire car if they treat the whole product as one :eek).

There must be some reason why the less money you spend on a satnav system the more likely it is to have postcode lookup.

Where i find it a massive annoyance in my mercedes systems is that many, many places do not have a number. The street could run right the way through a city. Its hopeless. What i have to do (which is not acceptable really) is punch the post code into maps on my phone, look at an intersection near it, and use the intersection feature of the satnav to take me there.
