I have Diablo 2 and LoD, but I was wondering if it would be worth trying to find Diablo 1 and playing it before starting with Diablo 2?

Does the Diablo 2 storyline follow on from the first?

Edit: Annoying thing is Blizzard don't have Diablo 1 on their Store.

It does kind of follow on but it's not vital.

Also Diablo 1 will NOT play in a Window, so unless you have a monitor at less than 800x600 it will look awful.

Edit: I emailed Blizzard to see if they'd ever make a patch for D1 to allow it to run in a Window, so that we might replay it without it being stretched horrifically across our glorious 1920x1200 monitors and they basically said "No, go away".

Edit2: Get PlugY and MultiRes for Diablo2. You'll need to use the 1.12(c I think) patch for MultiRes to work. PlugY adds infinite stash storage and the option to experience the World Events (Uber Diablo and Pandemonium). MultiRes lets you increase the resolution. I run at 1680x1050 in a window and it's great!
Edit3: PlugY might take a bit of tweaking to get working with MultiRes as you have to make PlugY load the specific .dll that MultiRes uses. There's a good video tutorial on how to set it all up somewhere online.

I first played D2 on a demo CD from a pc mag a loooong time ago. Never played the first and it doesn't matter - there are a couple of inside jokes for D1 players but that's it.

I'm playing D2 LoD again atm after a few years break and it's still as addictive as crack.

Damn skippy. I'm up to Act IV on Hell now with my Necromancer. Going to make a Barb after this as I've accrued some nice Barb gear. Will be a bit of a shock to the system actually having to fight stuff though, my minions do everything for me at the moment.

Damn. Multires doesn't work on the 1.13c update for Diablo 2 :( Anyone know a way to get higher resolutions? At the moment, I am running it in windows mode and maximising the 4:3 aspect ratio.

damn you
reinstalled is after reading this but my LOD key doesn't work?
do you have to install them in a set order or can you just install D2 then LOD?

If you link the game to your battle-net account I believe they provide you with a new key that will work.

Torchlight is a very good single player clone, it's basically a shorter, newer Diablo

There's a demo on Steam

I played D2 then went back and played D1. I remember thinking why can't I run in D1 and got annoyed at how slowly I moved and stopped playing it.

The Diablo 3 beta starts in just over a months time.

cant wait for diablo 3, been a long time since i have played a diablo game. but remember it was great. now i just have to upgrade my system so i can make the most out of it. tempted to break out my copy of diablo 2 now

Diablo 1 is great, though, and definitely worth a pop.

The classes aren't as restrained as in D2. Each class can do anything, so you could pick Sorceror and pump strength and use Melee weapons and shields. I used to play a Warrior with huge mana pools and all teh spells memorised. Obviously the Mana-per-point value for warrior is much lower than sorc, so you're at a disadvantage, but its still fun.

Plus, Tristram in D2 will make more sense once you've played D1. Particular in-jokes cross between the games too, such as Wirt dropping tons of gold in D2 as in D1 he would charge a fortune for stuff he sold.

If you have a netbook, or something, then play through D1. Grab the Sierra made expansion too.

Moo. i said Moo. Look.. i'm just a cow ok?

Christ. Any game where the best armour is called The Bovine Plate and is cow-coloured, complete with udders, is a winner in my book.

Such a shame the game itself did not reflect the looks of the armour :P As for class restrictions - its because of them that the game was heavily imbalanced in the mage's favour. Being the fastest spell caster and the second fastest melee weapon user made him the best class in game. Warrior by contrast may have been the fastest melee user but was the slowest caster so couldn't equal the mage's potential.

Unfortunately MultiRes doesn't support the latest patch. I preferred the extra res over the patch so I reinstalled the game and only updated to 1.12c so that the MultiRes would work.
