I was all booked for my trip to LA next month - unfortunately British Midland have cancelled their flights from Glasgow to London, so Ive got a refund (minus credit card fee, can they legally keep this charge?)

I was paying £1911.79 which comprised of a £37.49 booking fee through opodo, now ive decided I wanted to spend a wee bit extra time there, an extra 5 days so i took the cancellation offer.

I was flying to Heathrow from Glasgow and then onto LA direct, but I can go via Philadelphia and get the cost down to £1700 plus booking fee, is there any problem flying via an american airport rather than flying direct from the UK that i should know about?

Can opodo legally keep my credit card fee even though they changed the airport I was leaving from and offered me a full refund as a result?

Worst "Look at me I can afford to go business class" thread ever :p

Seriously... Make sure you have about 2 hrs absolute minimum as transiting in the US is a major PITA. (3 hrs is better)

Opodo did not change it, BMI did, but I would assume you understood that you lost the booking fee as part of the agreement to cancel. I'd ask them TBH

I can't see how they can retain the fee - they cancelled, not you.

I am assuming you are flying Business - if not you are getting ripped off or paying well over the odds - if so I'd be very careful about booking an indirect flight as you may find the business class offering on the connecting flight to be rather sub-par compared to the transatlantic one.

Business/First class on internal US flights tends to just mean you're sitting at the front of the plane, unless it's a larger plane.

I'd much rather fly direct than go business and have a changeover. Why don't you just fly cattle class to LA if you're bothered about saving £200?

Not flying business, im going with my two daughters who pay full price.

Average at best it would seem, though sadly thats pretty much par for the course with transat. There are very few 'decent' airlines on this route with one exception - Air New Zealand have a fantastic economy class product and also the best seat pitch (34") of any economy class on the LAX route.

A lot of the planes US Airways use for transatlantic routes only have overhead TV's for entertainment, not personal video on demand. There is NO inflight entertainment on the domestic part of the trip (ie Phil to LAX).

Its pretty annoying the best flight times is flying with US airways so i think ill bite the bullet and see how it is, reading reviews of other airlines everyone seems to moan about even the best of them.

I think the deal breaker for me would be no entertainment on the domestic leg in the US.

Ive been searching for hours now and I would be spending £600 minimum to fly with a non budget airline, so ive gone ahead and booked with them. £600 is quite a lot of fun in LALA Land for the sake of being a wee bit more comfortable for a couple of days of flying, ill no doubt be cursing my decision when im on the plane!

US used to be good with a 33-34 inch pitch, this has been reduced to 31 which is similar to the rest, the transtlantic planes have great IFE but the internal planes hace been wrecks in my exoerience, I am doing MAN - PHL in August , only options were US and BA and theer is nothing to pick between them

All sorted now, the only problem I had, Hertz have changed their rental cars, as TWFox had recommended, I opted for the Sebring or similar which was £200 for 5 days, but they dont have that option now, its a Mitsubishi eclipse or similar, which had jumped to £900 for 9 days. Fortunately I was able to cancel my booking and Ive got a convertible for $540 which i have to pay at the point of collection.

Now I just need to plan what im going to do when i have the convertible, that part of the journey will be just myself and my 15 year old daughter, we are at loggerheads as to what to do, the only thing we have agreed on is going to San Francisco to see Alcatraz and have booked this up, but other than that, we cant decide! I would love to goto Vegas but she says there will be nothing there for her, so if anyone can recommend stuff that a teenager might enjoy in California.
