Ok, I hope people can offer some help here.

As of october im going to be a dad, so the 3dr astra is looking like its going to have to depart. As well as it costing nigh on £250 a year to tax and only getting 32 to the gallon, its not practical for when the baby arrives so im looking at a swap.

Now, I obviously want 5 doors, something a bit bigger than the astra, i'm thinking its time to delve into diesel territory to try and get something nearer 45 to the gallon and less on tax.

So, off the top of my head my options as I see them are,

Vectra
Laguna
Mondeo
Avensis
Passat

Budget,

Well things are pretty tight now to say the least, so if I can get a car for the same or less than I get for my astra then I would much prefer it.

Not sure what i'd be looking at getting for my car? Going on what I paid for it and what similar ones are going for on Autotrader and the likes I hope 4k is more than likely, maybe nearer 4.5 seeing as my mileage is rather low in comparison.

So, thoughts, suggestions, opinions wanted.

Cheers.

My Mondeo (2.0 TDCi) averages 45mpg and i drive quite enthusiastically quite often.

If i could go back and get another i'd probably have had the 2.0 petrol for a bit more piece of mind where common Ford diesel issues come into play (DMF, injectors) however the model that i wanted (Zetec S) mostly came in 2.5 V6 and 2.0 TDCi form, since i was moving away from a V6 the diesel ended up being the car of choice.

Having a child does not mean you need more than 3 doors, I manage fine :o

Depends quite a lot on the age of the child.

I couldn't put up with leaning in the back of a 3 door car all the time to put my 11 month old son in/out of his seat.

I don't understand why you need to change a Vauxhall Astra hatchback because you are having one child. It's a child not an elephant? When did the world decide you needed an Ocean liner for a kid?

When I was 4, and my sister was a few months, my Mum drove us around in a Ford Escort RS2000 - which was a 2 door saloon!

How many miles are you doing a year? A diesel may end up costing more than a petrol if you aren't careful!

Average mileage for myself is approx 10k/year.

I have had the astra for getting on for 3 years now and want a change regardless, but with a child on the way I think its only sensible to look at something, and I quote myself, "a bit bigger". Im not looking into great 7 seat people carriers here?

My GF is :( For some reason she thinks that it will be "safer" and for the one or two trips a year we make as a family + grandparents the 7 seats will be invaluable.

However we are talking about the same person that wanted to PX her Corsa for a Focus... because it looked like a Corsa :D

I changed from my Clio 182 to a four door car when my little boy came along.
It wasn't just about needing more space, though.

God forbid, in the event of a bad accident can you imagine trying to get a baby out of a 3 door car?

i think he wants a bigger car for bootspace to? carrying prams and what not. and as above quote. i hated getting my nephews in and out of a 3 door. a 4 door makes it so much easier

Well things are on hold for a week or two now thanks to a stupid blind HGV driver....
