hopefully going to order these parts the next few days once i have maid sure its as good as value im going to get :D

XFX HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 900mhz
P67A-GD65 (B3) iP67 Socket 1155 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5 2300 2.8GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache retail Boxed
Seagate 1TB 3.5" Barracuda SATA-III 6Gb/s Hard Drive - 7200RPM 32MB Cache 25285
Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Memory Module CL9 1.5V

These are the parts i am looking to buy i have a few questions before i order :)
1. is the i5 2300 a good overclocker like the 2500k and will it be possible to get anywhere near 4.0ghz ?
2.i can get the 6870 really cheap or shall i just opt for a 5850 of ocuk and overclock that as well i have a 4870 512mb at mo so not sure if it worth getting a gpu or wait till near the end of the year for BF3 ?
3. i have read good things about the motherboard i have picked is there any better for the price range it is in ?
4. would i benifit from a 64mb cache hd to 32mb ?

Thanks for taking the time to read and any help would be greatly on what parts are better for the money ;)

The 2300 isnt a K cpu, so zero overclocking.

Or stick with the MSI GD65 if you want to go Crossfire/sli in the future?

i have a lian li midi case that i have a q6600 overclocked to 3.4ghz so not sure if i would have to change to my thermaltake armour tower case for a lower case temp for dual gpu,s
something for me to thing about in the future i suppose i always seem to have the option for crossfire on most of my old mobo,s and never used it lol

I picked just 1 stick of 4gb ram due to adding in the future and not having to lower my clock speed by having 3 or 4 ram slots full for 8gb of ram , dont these sandybridge mobo suffer from that like old boards like my asus p5wdh deluxe

You want to be installing RAM sticks in pairs, so you get the benefit of the dual channel operation and speed increase.

No, there is no benefit from having SATA6GB/S on a mechanical harddrive, they cant even saturate a SATA3GGB/S connection, the 64mb of cache is pointless too.

The only time that WD black is better is if its cheaper.

im not trying to be a pain but why have sata 3 on mobo,s if its not quicker for file moving and other stuff im not saying i dont believe you its just why are they so much more if there not that much better than a f3 .

i suppose if i get the f3 drive i can put the money towards 2 sticks of 4gb ram then its cheap enough would it be worth it do you think .
still undecided about which mobo to get but im leaning towards the cheaper one due to me thinking i have never used crossfire i always seem to upgrade to a more powerful card .

thanks for all the help stulid ;)

SSD's, they benefit from SATA6GB/S connections.

Will order a ssd drive later on in the year now i know that , not followed pc for the last few years so will ask advice on here when it comes to finding one .
The price of the 5850 went up before i could order it so i opted for this instead rev .1

Will hopefully last me 2 years like my 4870 did :D
Just ashame it did not come with a game all the HIS cards come with a few but there is no HIS 6950 2gb on overclockers :(really would have like shogun 2 never mind will have to stress my gpu with minesweeper instead ;):D

very nice you won't regret it:p Have you seen the thread about flashing it to a 6970?

do you have one ? the reason i ask is im wondering how long it is ?

will be looking into that overclocking straight away as soon as i have built it , hopefully get the parts some time next week .
I remember flashing my 4870 with asus bios and that has done me proud for 2 years

No I don't have one myself unfortunately. Maybe soon though :D lol

From this link it gives 9 steps:

  1. Grab ATI Winflash from here (32 & 64-bit).
  2. Download HD 6970 BIOS. The Sapphire one I linked to will work on all reference design cards from any vendor.
  3. Make sure the BIOS switch on the card is set to the 1 position (pictured further down if you don't know where it is).
  4. Run ATI Winflash, click Save to save your BIOS, so you have a backup in case something goes wrong.
  5. Load the HD 6970 BIOS into Winflash by clicking Load Image, followed by Program.
  6. Let the flashing process complete and reboot your system.
  7. Check the shader count using GPU-Z, it should show 1536. Make sure you use version 0.5.0 or newer, the official 0.4.9 version does not support HD 6900 Series properly. If you see a shader count of 1600, your GPU-Z version is outdated.
  8. To ensure maximized performance open Catalyst Control Center, go to the Overdrive tab and set the PowerTune slider to the +20% setting. The "Testing" section of this article has more data on that.
  9. Check stability in Windows desktop applications and games.

Edit: Just seen Stulid's post and am now unsure if you mean how physically long it is or how long the unlocking process is. I'll leave this up anyway.

Reference design so about 11"

Thanks for the info if it dont fit in my ian li it will have to all be moved to my thermaltake armour , so for being a PITA but where are the power onnectors situated ?

Yeah i meant the actually physical size of the card but cheers for putting the info up , will do it when i get all my new parts :D

I just measured one, a reference design is exactly 275mm, the power connectors are on the side.

im back again just wanting to know what sort of psu would i need for 2 6950,s ?the one i have at the mo is corsair hx650 professional
my cpu will be i5 2500k clocked as well 2 hd,s and a optical drive .
my parts dont look like they will turn up till tuesday now due to courier not picking up over weekend .

Keep your PSU.

that was the answer i was looking for but did not expect , looks like i will be posting here again when i do my overclock take it is always best for a higher clock to do it through the bios ?
I have a akasa venom cpu cooler so i dont know what to expect suppose i will find out soon .
cheers for the quick answers bud :o
