I'm looking for something to replace my E90 320D.

The boot is too small for my requirements and I want something that's easy to get 2 pre-school kids in and out of.

So far the BMW X3 seems to tick all the boxes but apart from a test drive last week I don't know much about them.

Anyone here owned one?

I've found a 3.0D Auto M Sport version and the garage have offered a decent trade in on my car, but would like to hear any feedback from people who have experience of them.

Cheers

Is the boot bigger on the E91?

Even after looking at the touring (used to have an E46 320D Touring) I would like more boot space and to have the kids higher from the floor.

X3 seems to be c. 550 litres, E91 c. 460 litres. If you want your children higher from the floor (Why? Just curious..) then I guess there's not much a wagon will do for you.

Go the whole hog and get a X5 do they cost much more to run? Im not an expert but i can never see the point of a half baked 4x4 might as well get the real deal.

Isn't the 3 just as spacious as the 5, near on the same boot space or something.

I find it hard getting the car seats in and out and (maybe incorrectly) think they would be safer up high.

Before 06 yes, 229g/km but from 2006 they dropped to 206g/km so both fall in to band K.
That is for the auto version. The manual is below 200g/km

Why do you take the car seats out? Mine just stay in the car - only take them out to clean the back seats every few weeks.

If you're worried about safety then don't put them in a car (or let them out the house, climb trees, go swimming etc). There wont be much difference between an X3 and another modern saloon from a decent manufacturer.

It is technically a generation behind your E91. The X3 was introduced in 2004 and was the last car to be introduced based around the E46 platform. This is why the interior is quite... shall we say... odd. It's a curious mix of slightly fresher styling mixed with E46 switchgear and oddly cheap plastics. You've also got E46 electronics etc, so all the displays etc, inc the instrument panel, have an older look and feel to your E46.

Nav fitted models use the old Mk4 DVD based system first seen in the E39 5 Series, whereas if your E91 has nav it will have the newer iDrive system...

Not sure I'd call it an upgrade, really.

I take the car seats out because the youngest ones seat can be plugged into her pram, and most days I have to take the other seat out so my eldest daughter can get a lift back from playschool with a friend.

Different cars offer different levels of safety. You seem to have a problem with people taking this into consideration?
