Hey all.

Got an email today saying the following is the cost of parking on University campus for an annual permit:

CO2 emissions (g/km) Cost of annual permit
Less than 100........................£0
100 –139..............................£120
140 – 179.............................£160
180 – 220.............................£250
More than 220.......................£300

They also have several spaces reserved for electric only vehicles to which I think there is one on campus.

Is there anything more to this than just making more money? iirc the current fee is £150 for the year.
Anyone elses place of study or work doing this?

Money making.

If it were me I'd be telling them I've converted my 350Z to run on AA batteries and get my parking for free.

I believe most cars produce 0% CO2 when parked/switched off? Why should they care about CO2 in a car park?

Pure money making for the Eco Terrorists in my opinion.

How ridiculous. There is no way I'd have been happy to pay £300 a year to park my car whilst at Uni!

I presume people who drive a 2000 Ferrari 550 can park for free as it dates from before CO2 figures were published on the V5 document?

I think the OP should post the email address for the uni department responsible for parking so we can enquire about this. ;)

Haha it is just a notification email I don't think its replyable to.

They link to the government website regarding what co2 a car gives out, yet on the drop-down it only goes back as far as 2001. My car is 2000 so I can't even look.

EDIT: There is an FAQ but the link I want that says what if my car is pre 2001 isn't working at the moment. Will try again later.

Charging it like that makes it sound like they expect you to leave the car running all of the time when parked :P

Go argue that yours is a 0 as you turn the engine off ;)

Sounds wonderfully thought out!

What about person A with a car which does 137g/km CO2 who drive 40 miles to Uni compared to person B with 145g/km CO2 who drive 5 miles down the M6 because there are no direct transport links or ability to walk/cycle? :p

What University is this? Why does it matter what CO2 rating your car is?! As far as the Uni's are concerned - 1 car parking space is 1 car parking space, whether it's filled with a Toyota Prius or a Ferrari Enzo.

EDIT: Also, how many Uni students are in a position to choose what kind of car they get? Most just go round in £1000 snotters because it's all they can afford.

This isn't to make money, most of the student cars are going to fall in the £120 or £160 brackets.

That said I'd have been sitting firmly in the £300 bracket. Of course I would have simply bought the permit for a Polo bluemotion then claimed I "just bought" the Alfa.

Probabley some students who are part of some nazi green orginisation at the university have managed to get their claws into a small part of the running of the university, and think it's a good idea.

Universities are under immense pressure in the sustainability drive and have always prided themselves by leading the way. Count yourself lucky there is any parking at all: University of Surrey has next to no student parking to encourage not having a car there. And to be fair, you don't need one at UniS anyway. I very much doubt this is a green scam to make money on.

So you're in halls? I'm surprised there is parking available, there's none at our uni. I'd just chuck it down a side street if you really must have a car in halls.
