With 1920x1200, a single GTX570, 6970 or GTX480 will be hunky-dory for some time with a good CPU behind them. Better to fork out the big money if you see something you like next gen, or the one after, when extra GPU power is actually relevant.
I game at 1900 x 1200
A 120gb SSD will be about right for me. In addition to the OS I aim to put my steam folder on it but only have the currently active game downloaded to conserve space. i.e. will delete the local content of other games. I can always re-load/download a different one after playing/finishing current game. This should then leave enough space for a few other non steam games to be loaded on the SSD.
Only reason for using the SSD for the steam folder is I'm guessing game-saves and next-section-of-map loads will be a bit quicker. Not 100% sure about this though.
Going off the idea of a 590 and liking the 570 now (thx for the heads-up on reliability) and looking at OCUK putting together a new rig for me on the 'configure yourself' section based on an i5 + 570 + slow SSD, sandybridge system for around £1500. A bit more than the £1200 mentioned but I figure what the heck, may as well get a new case + more powerful PSU + Win 7 & 2tb storage and let the experts put it all together for me![]()
Also the door on my current case has snapped off and after 2 years it's starting to make funny noises and needs to be thumped sometimes.

c. Just crossfire the 5850 on existing rig (£120)
d. New i7 rig+ ssd + gtx 590 (£2k)
PC just used for games

That if you already have case/PSU/hardrives/DVD-rom/keyboard/monitor/mouse etc and just looking to upgrade
A Q6600 would be a major bottle neck for a GTX 590....

so a lot more bang for buck sace is just a as a guide line price but its a good case for the priceI think you could get a very nice i7 rig with an ssd and a 589 for about 1.2k
That is just for the computer, no peripherals or monitor.
I have been looking into putting together a system like that for myself (and giving my dad my current rig).
Back to my earlier question - are you having any problems with your 5850 at the moment? Personally I stil find mine plays everything I want to an acceptable level. IF i was you I would prob just go for 5850 crossfire and hold off ding a full system upgrade till later - Sandybridge will be old tech in a year!
