FAO: Bus passengers

It is indicative of the amount of abuse staff receive on a regular basis that enclosures are necessary in the first place.

That's what I'm saying, you were suggesting that people were more likely to be assaulted by having enclosures when it's simply that they were installed in response to the robberies.

Here in HK, like in London there is Octopus card, it saves so much time with fares, and busses/mtr here are very popular and REALLY cheap. The msot expensive bus I took from one end of HK to the airport was about 2 quid :D.

Oh yes, here its also exact change, but you can of course give more, just never recieve anything back, one of my friends didn't have anything smaller then 500 HKD note and bus drivers let him on for free.

Errr, no I didn't. I said that the areas where enclosures are used are generally regions that a driver is more likely to be assaulted and robbed. That is why the enclosures are necessary....

it is also one of the reasons why some companies are exact change only, as the money is then dsposited in a safety deposit box under the bus and the driver handles no money neither has access to it.

Anyway, enough of this. Just carry some change if you know you are catching a bus and then on the occasion when you don't have any the Driver is more likely to be able to accommodate you. If you have any issues regarding service or a drivers attitude then complain to relevant company so it can be investigated and dealt with.

It isn't rocket science.

A single machine cost several thousand pounds, across a fleet of thousands of vehicles, added to that training, technical support, maintenance and various other costs involved, the cost overall is very significant.

I doubt a single oyster machine costs several k given how the system is already in place in large volume

It is totally reasonable to think that with the price of bus fares these days that notes are going to be used more often.
I've been getting the bus for fifteen years. I've never known a driver to take notes.

And in recent years there has been a concerted effort to do away with cash fares wherever possible (passes, travel cards, saver tickets, oyster cards).

There's also the issues of theft and, presumably, insurance.

1. There are seats upstairs, use them.

2. No one wants to hear your music, put some headphones on.

3. It is not the driver's fault that you don't have the correct fare.

4. **** and **** belong in the toilet, not your pants.

5. Wash.

That is all.

1. If im only going 2 or 3 stops, im not walking upstairs to come straight back down again

2. I dont want to hear other people smusic and/or stupid chavvy talk, so my music is at a level that drowns all this out, if its a quiet bus, my music is quiet

3. No but they shoul dhave change on a Monday morning when i want a week saver and he hasnt got £2.50 change from a £20 note

4. I cannot even start to work out what the hell you mean here

5. Surely this would go for anyone, anytime :/

If you are that bothered, walk :)

Smokers should be banned from buses too.
Putting out a docker then getting the bus as you exhale your last puff & then sitting behind me stinking of smoke - you make me wanna puke. Dirty, Smelly ******

Please if you smoke - don't have a fag for at least an hour before you get on the bus.

Not as bad as the people who smoke on the buses though. Or do drugs. Glasgow...

So all of the above are sitting downstairs, and there are seats upstairs......ever thought of trying your own advice and 'use them'? :p

A bus has a till just like a shop, no reason for there to be any difference in practice. And as for journey planning, the website of many providers does not provide the prices so it's not possible in many cases to find out how much it costs, and what if someone just decides get a bus home from town? Not all journeys are planned.

You should be buying your ticket from the machines (which have change) at the bus stops in london :p
.. before you get on the bus

Although most local people would just have an oyster i would guess considering its cheaper ><

You lot riding on the just think of us poor buggers that have to deal with the smelly ingrates of the world on a daily basis, stinking of everything you can think of and taking more abuse than your average policeman on a friday night!

Yes I am a bus driver, in the city of Bath/Bristol and in between!

X39?

You probably work with my mum then, randomness XD

Then you concede enclosures can be an effective means to prevent crime and allow drivers to carry much more change.

Unfortunately London is on the other side of the country, there isn't even a timetable at my nearest bus stop...

I get buses all the time. They are generally the quickest way for middle distance journeys in London where the tube lines aren't so prevalent. I'm about a 15 minute walk from my nearest tube line but its only a 5 minute bus ride and when it comes to extra time in bed that **** counts.

You do get some proper specimens on buses and I do agree with all of the OP's points. Particularly about going upstairs. Nothing drives me crazy like waiting for a bus in winter only to watch one not stop because the downstairs is totally rammed and you can see the upstairs is completely empty. I would also add a few of my own:

6. If you absolutely positively have to take your greasy KFC/Happy meal on the bus, don't smear it all over the seats/floor and FFS take the stuff with you when you get off. The number of times I have found half eaten chicken legs on bus seats is beyond belief.

7. Bus drivers need to calm the **** down. I appreciate it might not be the most fulfilling job and that the general public can be a pack of ****s at times, but that's no excuse for treating your passengers like dirt. There are 4 or 5 bus drives on my routes that I know pretty much by sight these days as being a bunch of absolute ****s. One guy in particular doesn't stop for passengers when the bus is only half full and every so often seems to do some sort of ragequit on his job when he wont let people off the bus. He just drives past the stops no matter how many times people hammer the button.

8. Gangs of yoofs are always a little threatening and you do get the odd full on nutter on a night bus, but there is nothing-but-nothing worse than a group of young teenage girls getting on your bus. Seriously. Something about girls between about the age of about 10 and 15 makes them regress into a bunch of shrieking neanderthals the second you put more than 2 of them in a group. Plus there is sod all you can do about it if they start getting out of order. At least if some little arse starts getting lippy on a bus you can threaten to kick his head in (even if it is an empty threat), but you're helpless vs a girl. What am I suppose to do, use logic on them? That only makes them angry!

WRONG it is the fault of the bus company that you have to WAIT to get onto the bus to know how much it will cost. YET they expect you to have a handful of loose change just incase it's £1.28!
