Hey guys,

Just want a bit of advice really as i'm not really too clued up on TVs. Me and my brother are buying my rents a new TV for their birthdays. They would like the following; 50", Full HD, 3D. Think we have around £800 to spend, i'm currently looking at the Samsung PS51D550?? Opinions?

Cheers!

I don't think you get any 3D glasses with that tv, you have to buy the 2011 model glasses that use bluetooth for about £50 a pair. Is it really buying 3D at the moment? There is so little content on bluray & sky, aswell as the technology not being very mature, if you really want to get them a 3D TV you ought to be spending double so that your not disappointed with it in a couple years time.

PANASONIC VIERA TXP46G20
...would be my recommendation, I am a panasonic plasma fanboy though! Not quite 50inch ( but would you really notice?!) but give it 200 hours to burn in, dispaying HD from the built in freeview/freesat HD tuners & it will look sublime all for the princely sum of £660...bargain! With the change from £800 you could get a well performing bluray player(3D capable for when 3D is worth the cash) & a pair of speakers that will transform the sound. This would be far better than spending £800 on a very slightly better tv.

You could get the TXP50G20 for £599 a week or so back, believe with a bit of looking around it is still around £650'ish. I got mine in another thread on here, great looking TV, sound is ok (better than the LG LCD downstairs), but will be hooked up to the Yamaha receiver anyway for movie goodness!

Those two original suggestions weren't 3D capable though - the only 50" Panasonics currently available that can do 3D would be either the 50ST30 or the 50GT30 (with the 50VT20 being last years only 50" 3D capable panny).

The 46" versions would also be nice but of course getting as a big a TV as you can is always best :)

For £800 I don't think you could get anything good that's current gen but I'm sure there are Samsung and Sony TVs that can do 3D for around that price - just maybe not 50" in size ...

Just because it's cheap and the specs say 3D doesn't make it good in any way.

A low price for a set this size and 3D means many cut corners!

Well everyone knows you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. I wasn't stating it was a good set, just that it was available.

Indeed I think that's sound advice, going for the best spec non 3D TV you can afford will get you a nicer set than going cheap 3D!

That's why I went for the 50V20 last year as it seemed a good step up from the G20 but I didn't want to hand over nigh on £2k for the VT20 so it was a nice compromise.
