After 38105 shutter actuations...(Now with video!)

...I got an "Err 99" last night :(

Had a look at the camera and the shutter is ****ed

Now I am without camera. Anybody know how much it is to get replaced?? It's a canon 450D. If it's more than €200 I might take it as an excuse to upgrade. Second hand 50D maybe. My birthday is in two weeks and was going to get a tripod, looks like i'll be putting the money towards getting the 450d fixed or upgrading.

I bought it second hand off an asian fella over two years ago so I don't know if it will have a European warranty and if it does will it be longer than two years?

I emailed the Canon service center here in Ireland, waiting on a reply. I'll have to dig out the box and check out the warranty stuff.

I'v owned both, the 550D is the better camera, just get a grip for it.

It might also be worth getting a quote from Lehmann's for a new shutter box.

Isn't err99 an error with the camera/lens contacts that just need cleaning?

Some times, it seems that it's just a generic error that could be a number of things. I think a firmware update fixed that to narrow down the cause, they added Err 01, Err 02 etc with different causes. I was still on the original firmware.

when you say the shutter is ****ed, is it physically broken?

error 99 is a general "oh dear there is something wrong with me" error when it doesnt fall into one of the other code brackets.

When I lift the mirror and turn it on, it kinda moves maybe 1mm and then goes back. Only one corner is moving aswell, it's not staying horizontal. I'll try get a video of it, maybe it's something else and it's just making the shutter act weird

Here's a weird thing i've noticed that is making me think that it might not be the shutter.

With the camera switched off and the battery removed, I put in the battery, then when I close the battery door the shutter tries to move?? With the camera still switched off! When I open the door it does it again. Close it, it does it again. And again when I open it. All the time when the camera switched off!? So maybe it's a power problem??

Think I'll have to send it in somewhere in any case, it could be anything I suppose, just assumed it was the shutter from looking at it trying to move. Hmmmmmm

Canon service centre will do a fixed price repair for £104 no matter what s wrong,

I just had external and internal LCDs changed, view finder and flash assembly and full clean and calibration.

Also get 6 months warranty as it ends up with full refurb status.

Email me if you want there address or contact details.

here's a video of whats happening. This also happens when the battery door is opened, and closed, even when the switch is in the Off position

EDIT: Is video showing for anyone?

Edited again,thanks Bulby

The mirror doesn't move, shutter does. And I don't think it happens when it's turned on, only off. Just charging my camcorder now so I'll try get a video of what's happening up.

sorry thats what i meant..

not sure then based on the vid, looks odd. maybe worth a call to canon or lehhmans for advice?

I've emailed Canon Service place over here and Fixation for an estimate. If it's more than €200 I think i'll just put it towards an upgrade, have my eye on a second hand 50D.
