Virgin 50MB, through a router = 30MB?

Hello guys,

After speaking to Virgin yesterday I realised I was getting 50MB into my house but when ran through the router, it goes to 30MB? I plugged the modem directly into my laptop, did a speed test, bang! 50MB! Put the router in the equation and for some reason it only hits 30MB, where is this 20MB difference going? Not using Wireless, my house is hard wired using ethernet plugs, but even when not going through them plugs, it's the same speed so it can't be them?

They have supplied me with a D-Link D615 router.

Any suggestions? This is very bizarre!

Thanks

Perhaps it's firmware related... I don't have much experience with the standard D-Link firmware as I flashed my dir-615 with dd-wrt, which I'd highly recommend.

As I've got nothing to do at the mo', I'll do some googling an see what I can come up with.

[EDIT] How long have you had the router? When I upgraded to 50mb, I was told the dir-615 can't handle 50mb speeds, clearly total bull but I've been messed around by the VM so much the past week, I wouldn't put it past them to throttle speeds using firmware.

Thanks for the reply.
I was getting 4mb download and the same upload for about 2 weeks - I thought it was a line fault. I actually had the dd-wrt firmware on it, when I flashed it back to original I got my 30mb back.

It MUST be router related - doubtful it'll be a fault.

We've had this router since we got the line put it about 12 months ago, NEVER got 50mb but i've never tested just plugging the modem into my PC/Laptop - When I did, to my amazement, I got 50mb!

When I put the dd-wrt firmware on it, I never changed a setting?

Thanks for your help mate, appreciated.

If I were you, I'd just check the router settings. As you've said, by process of elimination it has to be the router and I think it'll be much easier to diagnose a software problem than a hardware program. Perhaps you have QoS enabled... that's really just a guess though, from a someone who's knowledge isn't that great.

I'd also guess you have QoS enabled. That router isn't powerful enough to handle 50mbit and QoS. I know because I use the same router.

I also have 50mb from Virgin and 90% of the time I get 50mb even going through the D615 they provided...the wireless is terrible though.

Aye it's possibly a firmware issue, as I've got a 615 and get ~50/5 most of the time.
I vaguely remember that the 615 may have slow down if you've got it doing something like QOS, I've got QOS OFF and it works fine.
