My Fabia blew the turbo last weekend, got round to fitting the replacement today, this is what I found.

Pretty much self destructed, shot a hole straight through the silicone boost pipe!

All in all it cost me £265 for a turbo change and oil change.

Luckily didn't cause more damage, I've seen a fabia that blew the whole bottom end of the block off near enough when the turbo pumped oil into the engine and it revved to an insane speed before blowing, wrecked the flywheel from trying to stall it too!

Not good, just goes to show you don't get the savings people think you do out of these turbo diesels. If I didn't do almost 25k miles a year there is no way I'd want a diesel.

My 530d did this after being overfilled with oil. Fortunately, BMWs enginge cut off intervened before damaging anything other than the turbo

Yep Never heard of a turbo blowing on a petrol car.

Oh hang on.

:Facepalm

OP do you do a proper warm up cycle.

And do you give it a bit of stick every now and again to stop the variable vains getting smogged up..

Mines done several 100k and gets driven like its been nicked.

Yeah, it can cost a fortune when it really does go wrong.

My trusty old astra though, I can get an engine + box for £100 :p

Ouch! Didn't know there was such a thing that shut them down, lucky escape :)

All these reports of exploding KKK's have me slightly concerned. Really should find out which type mine has fitted...

It was quite funny actually, I was out for a drive with a friend when it happened and i said there have been a lot of reports of turbos blowing at around 80k, he said how many miles are you on, and I said 82k haha. 10 minutes later my turbo blew...doh.

I think 99% of the Fabias have the KKK's, only ever heard of a few with Garrets.

Was a KKK fitted on the one I saw, no idea ow 'common' the problem is though!

Sods law at it's best :D

It's not unknown on the owners forums for various ASZ engined cars to report turbo trouble at 70-80k. Then again they're the clued up enthusiast minority. It's usually the KKK. From what I can gather it's pot luck if it was a KKK or Garrett fitted.

At the current rate of running I'm safe for a good ten years yet!

I assume that is the compressor wheel? Doesn't look like you have all the bits there? I'd be worried about where the rest are.

This is something I've wondered about VAG's turbo 4 pots. In the good old days of them using superchargers you'd get it refurbed every 40k to 60k (can't remember which). But when I recently asked on a TT forum how often you needed to service the turbo I didn't get a single reply.

Not having owned an old turbo car, do you need to get them serviced at regular intervals???

There's not really any serviceable parts on a turbo, bar a costly full strip and rebuild of the turbo, regular oil changes is all that can be done.

I guess a strip and rebuild of the turbo could save your engine if the turbo was to fail though.

yeah but people who swap their Petrol engined mondeo for a diesel focus because they think its cheaper don't have a turbocharger, then all of a sudden after the switch ... do.

Turbo diesels are the norm now, almost every diesel engine has a turbo. Same can't be said for petrols. (although i will concede its an increasing trend)

Mine went in the middle of manchester airport blowing smoke everywhere at over 7k rpm, 2mins alter i was surroudned by armed piglets.

new turbo, car runs perfect :) (although it was just my bearing that gave way)

I've always been a bit curious as to what happens with this 'runaway diesel' effect.. Do they start ingesting oil meaning you just can't shut them down easily or what?
