"I can't come in to work as I'm sick - I'm too hung over to drive to work."

I'm a Team Leader where I work and I'm starting dayshift this week. I just know that at 6am tomorrow i'll get 3-4 phone calls with people not coming in. They mostly phone in with dependency issues cos their partner is so 'ill' they have no one to look after the kids. It's the same people everytime we are on dayshift. They get dragged into see Personnel and that's it. I find it very frustrating, especially when you hear them talking afterwards saying they've got away with it .... and it always the young ones ......

Too hung over to drive to work, alright fair enough. Doesn't mean they can't get a taxi or bus to work though does it?

Complain to personnel? Do you know how many strikes they are allowed before any action is taken? Surely if you hear them talking about getting away with it then you should raise it with management.

Certainly is frustrating.

If they're unfit to drive there's a good chance they're also unfit/unsafe to work depending on their occupation

last thing you want is for someone to have an accident if you know they're under the influence

Should be fine with it at least they are honest. Next time if it bothers you so much tell them to say they have a dodgy tummy

it's up to your employer really, if they're not fussed why should it bother you?

having said that if they'd said that to me they'd be coming back in to a disciplinary.
Even if it was a one off event from a normally good employee? You wouldn't have an informal chat first. Seems a tad ott, if it is from a persistent offender it's a different story.

I got smashed on a Saturday night and forgot i had overtime at 9am. Finished drinking at 6am. So went home, showered and walked to work. Was great being at work drunk and getting paid double bubble :D

Exactly. It's it's a one off then have a chat first, make sure it's not going to become a habit. It is interesting to note some of the ott responses - makes you wonder (hope) they aren't actually managers...

If I can't work because I'm too hungover, I still go in and hang it out until somebody can come in and take over my shift.

Don't like letting the team be one player down.

If you are to hung over to work then chances are you may still be under the influence of alcohol, I believe most if not all companies have a policy where you are not allowed to work if you are under the influence of alcohol. Not sure which is worse, being drunk on the job or not coming in work because you are to drunk.

Very true but used to work in a call center. So just sat in a corner getting a coooofffeeee every 10 mins. lol.

What is wrong with unpaid sick leave?

He didn't get paid, and he didn't work, I believe balanced has been achieved.

Negative - the business has been forced to cope with reduced mandays due to unexpected absence caused by the irresponsibility of the employee.

from experience 'good' employees make sure they're fit for work, either way a disciplinary hearing doesn't necessarily result in a punishment for the member of staff.

Used to have two guys in the office who would go out drinking after the night shift and come 3-4 hours late at work the day after.

"Sorry. Was out drinking yesterday so had to sleep in"

They didn't last very long.
