Ok hi there every one, I have been a frequent browser of these forums, and have solved many problems just viewing other peoples problems .But now I have a problem and I have run out of options. I as many others have had problems with the 5850 not letting my computer boot when I install it ,as with many others the computer is up to spec and I even have a dedicated pcie express power supply 250w.
But after trolling the forums for a solution other than the bios update 1460 which I already had things seem to have gone cold so my question is did any one find a way to get the 5850 to work with the P5n-e-sli motherboard ? if so, please let me know as it is sitting in its box under my desk unused and I dont have money to waste on a graphics card just to sit in its box.
I even did a search to see if there were any compatability problems as the
p5n-e-sli has a nvidia chipset fitted to my Mb. Any help would be grateful as I have given up and there is no way I am going to change the Mb just to get the graphics to work ok hope to hear from anyone with a solution :rolleyes::(

Hi and thanks for your reply i have a 450w main power supply which only supplies the computer and cd rom, then i have a thermaltake power express 250w /300w max output , dedicated pci express power supply with a maximum of 25A on each 12v pcie express output of which there are 2 hope this helps people come up with ideas thanks ;)

It does seem wierd, but so long as it is set up right then it should provide power to the GPU without any issue, have a look here.

To the OP, have you used this PSU configuration successfully with other graphics cards or is this the first time you have tried to use it?

Also, do you have any single PSUs to hand which can power the full system one their own (including the 5850) which you can borrow quickly to test with?

thanks but i have used this config to power 2x 8800gts in sli and no worries but went for the upgrade to the 5850 . i know the 5850 is a working graphics card i tryied it my wife Mb . If replace one of the 8800gt it boots fine, it is just the ATi 5850 does not seam to be compatable with the nvidia chipset on my ASUS P5n-e-sli Mboard .there are loads of people in loads of forums with the same problem but the thread just seam to come to a end with no soloution .:(

I don't think you can use two PSU for one PC without some sort of bypass or something...

Two separate power supplies is perfectly fine as long as both use the same (common) ground reference... which would be as long as both use three pin plugs, in which case the common ground being earth.

hi there thanks again, look at cmndr post with the link for the pcie stand alone graphics card power supply he has underlined the link with the word here. Ok hope more people will answer soon, may be it is only people with problem's that come here and when they have fixed it they don't come back :(
