Hi,

I am just wondering, say like you have built up 10months of ncb with a company, would you be able to goto a new insurance company and start off from the 10 months? I get the feeling you can't but someone today was sure you can.

some companies like the admiral group , offer a 10 month policy where you have 10 months of cover but when you complete it, claim free of course, they give you a years NCB

No, it's a full year or nothing afaik. You are adding confusion by mentioning 10 months as this is the length of typical 'accelerator' policies, but you get a year NCB after completion of the 10 months.

I knew a fella that passed his test and immediately got his insurance policy on one of those 10 month accelerators. When it came to renewal time nobody else would recognise him as having a years ncb because he hadn't passed his test for a year, so their systems wouldn't have him as having a year's ncb. He had to stick with his original insurer, who bent him over (in)appropriately.

how long ago did it happen with your mate dabbles? i only seen one insurance company that turned down a 10 month policy but it was ages ago, most companies now are aware of the 10 month ones.

I think the issue above was more related to the fact that their systems wouldn't accept a driver with a years no claims when said driver only held his license for 10 months...

AFAIK Admiral groups 10 month bonus accelerator is treated as a 12 month, so at the end of your policy they give you a cert saying it's full year NCB, stand to be corrected...

your correct, the policy obviously runs for 10 months but when you complete it claim free they will give you a full year ncb. its aimed at new drivers or people who have been on company/fleet insurance to build them up quicker

It was 5-6 years ago. Things may well have changed since then.

Hmm will have to give insurance a bell tomorrow then I think.

What's to stop someone building up ncb bonus on a learners license?

Nothing to stop you having 2yrs ncb and only 1 year or even no years on your license.

your age is more a factor than years driving, if you pass say when your 17 and drive for two 10 month terms, then before your 19 you would have two years ncb.

This is true and there is someone on here that did that iirc... I think it was the guy who had a classic mini as a first car for a few weeks and then bought something else. Might be wayyy off.

When I was with Aviva (Norwich Union back then) I had 2 x 10 month accelerator policies, only to find out that they weren't counted by anyone else, just them. I then continued a third policy for 4 months and cancelled the policy. When asked for a proof of NCB they sent me a letter stating 24 months.

So either you can claim months off a company, or it was just because it was a nice round 2 year figure.

yea im on one of these. /worked out nicely because im fast tracked to a years ncb, and by the time 10 months is up ive been driving 2 years, so cheap insurance! (not)

If you are aged 25+ and start a policy with 0NCD with Direct Line they will sometimes apply an introductory discount. At the end of 12 months as well as the premium reduction they will issue 2 years NCD instead of one.
