Would I be crazy to get one of these as my first car?

A Hyundi coupe SE to be precise, saw it today on the way to town in a local garage.

Now, my intention is still getting a Yaris but came across this, which cost less than what I was going to pay for the Yaris anyway but wondering if it would be a stupid car for a first car! Lol I have no idea of it's spec as I didn't have time to check it out, was just walking past the garage and it caughty eye. I have no idea of it'a MPG it insurance etc hence I'm here. Talk some sense into me people! Lol

Reg BU53 DNE if you guys wanna do some digging.

It's listed for £3.5k.

I don't think I need to even look for what that is (but I will). £3.5k for an 8 year old Hyundai does not a good deal make TBH.

Oh, it's that thing that looks a bit like a Bentley Continental from the back. Yes, you'd be mad as when you come to sell it, it'll be worth about 3 pence.

Sounds like a lot of money but you haven't given enough info, theres quite a few variants and specs the prices vary quite a bit

its an insurance group 12a, 3 door coupe. no something tells me it isnt a good idea for a first car. You have the reg - get some quotes for the insurance.

I caught your ninja edit! :p

A coupe. Well that depends entirely on the engine, as I imagine the dreadful 2.7 V6 would cost a bomb to insure. Actually, just no. Any other coupe would be better than this, for example a Toyota Celica which can be had for similar money for a similar age car.

A celica would be a hugely better buy if you must have a car like this. Probably not the best for a first car though.

Used to have the 2.0L SE myself.
From what I remember models are;
1.6L S
2.0L SE
2.7L V6

1.6 would be stupidly gutless as my 2.0L was not fast although as a first car I imagine either would be nice.

Mine had full leather, air con, climate control, decent sound system etc.

They are very low insurance group if you were to compare them to a Celica as mentioned.

Mine had some dodgy paint on the roof and had to have the steering rack replaced at about 60k but the 7 year warrenty covered it all.

I thought it was a really nice car to drive but the 30MPG did not go with the performance. For example when I changed it for an Astra VXR my MPG did not change yet the VXR would destroy the coupe.

Check insurance quotes but I certainly wouldn't have minded one as a first car.

I really shouldn't look at them on Autotrader as I just came across this and it looks nice!

Still got 2 year's warranty left? Hyundi has 7 years IIRC.

Though the 30mpg figure is halved of that of the Yaris ! but then again, my expected mileage a year is like 3,000 to 5,000.

Give it a test drive and see if you like it.

My friend has one almost identical to the above and is more than happy with it.

But.....coupe for a first car?

The only reason I am considering them is that although the Yaris takes ALL the boxes, but for the same money, I can get the Hyundi (need the check insurance). And it is FWD so unlike something like a Nissan 350Z which would be silly as a first car...which I know i will wrap it round a tree, I "suspect" the coupe would be predictable to drive in terms of handling like most FWD.

Then again, my sister went from a 1.4 Polo to a 2L 1 series without any problems.

p.s. how much room are there behind the front seats? is it a 4 persons car or a 2 persons + 2 midgets car? lol

I've been in the back of one of these and it was a squeeze and I'm 5ft 7 :p

Yep, and while you're checking it, get a quote on a 140BHP Celica (the VVTi version, not the 190BHP VVTLi version unless you can get insured). If it's not that much different and both are affordable, you owe it to yourself to at least have a poke around a Celica for comparison ad a test drive if you like it.

I wouldn't have the Hyundai. The warranty on them is 5 years (it's Kia with the 7!) and there are better cars out there. The Z4 is much better though more expensive. I'd avoid having any expensive first car as odds are on it'll be crashed, whether or not it has any power :p

As said above check out the Toyota Celica, or also try the Honda Prelude, in fact try the models of both before last as well as the last models as a 15 year old Toyota/Honda will prob be more reliable than a 8 year old Hyundai plus they will come better equipped.

My female cousin got one as her second car at 18 (after a brief spell with a Corsa), she loves it because it's a coupe and 'looks good'. Truth be told it looks miles better than the cars her mates drives (Clios and Corsas etc...).

She does complain about the petrol costs though compared with her 1.2 Corsa.
