Suggestions for site membership

I'm afraid I don't have the know-how to do this myself, but is there anything out there that allows me to set up a site membership system (i.e. sign up, authorisation email and site restrictions/access etc)?

Is there something that would perhaps tie in to an online forum - or is it best/easiest to keep it separate?

Amember is pretty good for running a 'paid' subscription site.

if you use wordpress there are some plugins or try codecanyon.net

I'm just building a subscription site for someone. I've gone with Wordpress with the Wishlist Member plugin and Simple Press forums. I've only done some basic configuration so far, but it appears quite good.

Is wordpress advanced beyond just being blogging software now? Haven't used it in years. Is it a viable way of developing an entire website these days?

Any good sites for themes? Looking on Theme Forest and, while the designs are nice (and sometimes outstanding) they aren't really practical. I want simple, clean.
