Hello,

I am considering upgrading my 650i to an M6.

Does anyone have any indication on what the general bill increase will be? I currently get around 17mpg from my car and am expecting around 14 from the M6. So about 20% increase in petrol costs.

My 650i has a warranty renewal of around £1500 in 2 weeks time, i will be purchasing the M6 from BMW so will have a warranty on that. The M6 currently has around 45k miles on it and would plan on getting rid of it before it hit 60k (when the warranty goes south, which is the current position im in with the 650i), which would take about 18 months for me.

I am more interested in the servicing costs if anyone has any idea, am i looking at 10% or 100% more than my current car?

Thanks!

My best advice is for you to phone your regular dealer's service department. Before I bought my 535d I called and asked for a breakdown of all servicing costs and intervals and they were more than happy to detail each service with estimated interval and the parts and labour price breakdown. It allowed me to forecast servicing costs quite accurately.

if you are only keeping it for 15k miles then you are only likely to need one service. It will be dependent on what it had last as assuming its the same as an E60 M5 its oil service, inspection 1, oil service, inspection 2, repeat.

from memory oil service is about £300 and insp 1/2 is about £600-700. The car uses expensive TWS 10-60 oil which you can't get around, you can save a little by buying it from opie oils and giving it to the dealer to put in but its still pricey.

you should also check the cost of the warranty renewal after one year as the 'M' cars are pricier.

To be honest, I would imagine if you are going to a dealer that the cost to change will be a much bigger factor in the scheme of these figures anyway.

how do you get 17mpg from a 650 ? my brother gets 26mpg from his

A mate has just got a 645. He barely uses it, but when he does it's a 5 mile commute to the office and back, mainly through 30's. He gets 19mpg.

He did a motorway journey down to London in it though and got a respectable 32mpg out of it. Just goes to show, slow constant speeds aren't always a great thing for that size engine :p

London unfortunately so stuck in traffic a lot.

I am reading that now you can just call up BMW warranty and purchase one even if it has lapsed which im sure wasnt the case previously. Is this true? If so it may remove the need to purchase from BMW.

You can do that but the warranty doesn't begin until one month after you purchase it. I'm assuming it's to cut down on bogus claims.

I love my M5, but can't help but think if you're driving that much in central London that i) it'd be a little wasted and ii) you'd be much better off with a car with a regular torque convertor automatic, or a more modern DCT 'box.

^^^^

Quite agree.

In an ideal world, if I were in a position to buy such a car - (I can dream :o ) - , ideally I'd love an M5 / M6 but for majority use in London traffic? Hell no.

from what ive read the SMG gearbox wouldnt exactly call low speed town manoeuvrability its speciality and then some ..

Take a test drive
