This follows on from my previous PSU thread:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18274381

Basically, I was talked out of buying a Coolermaster Silent Pro Gold, and having read a few more reviews etc I think I probably had a close escape - it's not a bad unit (for the price, anyway) but there are much better ones few a few quid more. Having nearly taken stulid's advice, I'm looking at the 650W TX-V2, a very solid PSU.

BUT... I also like the look of the HX650, although it is £20ish more. This is definitely over-budget for me, but I am trying to justify this as :
1) It is modular
2) It is 150mm long (TX is 160mm), which does help with my weird case
3) 7 year warranty (vs 5 for TX)

Is the HX just a TX with a modular design? I'm guessing no, as the case size and warranty are different, but they are both SeaSonic 80+ Bronze designs. Or is the HX a significantly better PSU, as well as being modular (and shorter)?

Any opinions/suggestions appreciated, but please DON'T suggest a Corsair AX as my budget is overstretched already!

Both are good PSU, in my mind it depends if the extra £20 for modular & slightly shorter is more suited to your case.

I don't think the seasonic is really in the same price bracket is it

OP, the only decision you need to makeis whether you want modular or not... if you really want to be able to remove the cables you're not using, thus saving space and minimising clutter, get the HX... If you couldn't give a monkeys chuff about removing unused cables, get the TXv2 :)

Simples.

(or, just to throw another into the mix... there's this one for ~£60 :))

Check out the XFX Black / Core 750W. It's a bit of a marmite thing as far as looks go, but it's a solid unit (Seasonic).

Do this. The XFX Pro Core Editions are rebadged TXs, and the XXX Editions are rebadged HXs (well, technically, they're rebadged Seasonic units, as are the Corsairs, but they're the same PSU given the same wattage underneath the stickers and paint). Sadly though, most XFX units are out of stock atm, so that might force your hand.

Only go modular if you have the money going spare, or if it'll really make a big difference to you.

Oh, and don't buy the OCZ unit. Corsair is miles better.

Oh, and don't buy the OCZ unit. Corsair is miles better.

Is there that much difference? I've not used OCZ PSUs so can't really comment, was merely going by brand/spec list etc :)

I've got a Corsair HX PSU in my rig and it's a cracking PSU, never missed a beat - but I've only got this because it was a gift - if I'd been buying, I don't think I would've spent the extra for a modular unit (plenty of room to hide cables in the HAF lol)

OCZ have lesser quality components. Still good PSUs, but I wouldn't trust them to perform as well as Corsairs after a few years of wear and tear. The new OCZ gold look nice actually.

You get what you pay for. OCZ are good enough to be recommended for tight budgets, but if you have a bit of money to spare, you're better off with a Corsair / XFX / Antec.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. But I'm still undecided. :(

The modularity is nice, but not enough to justify the price difference. But the 7 year warranty is tempting.

I'll have to do some more research on XFX and Antec, as size does matter (despite what the girlfriend said). I might wait til tomorrow and see what turns up on Today/This Week Only.

*** UPDATE / RESOLVED ***

Finally stopped deliberating and bought the HX650. The deciding factors (in increasing order of importance) were :

Modularity - Nice, but just a Brucie Bonus really.

Warranty - 7 years RTB is true peace of mind, and no need to RMA to Europe. Should last me 'til my 2nd or 3rd build with any luck.

Performance - Not much impovement in efficiency over the TX-V2, but slightly better voltage regulation and ripple suppression. Beats the CM SilentProGold (my original choice) hands-down here, although losing ~3% efficiency.

Fit - As well as being short (150mm), the cables/connectors are on the bottom (where the PSU fan is). The case exhaust fans block the top 25mm, which rules out the XFX XXX and Seasonic X-660.

Price - £83 delivered was too good to miss, definitely worth the extra over the TX-V2. "Get the best you can afford", and then grab it on special offer. :D

Thanks for your advice/suggestions guys, and look forward to my upcoming threads - "What's the difference between these 17 mobos?", "Is this RAM really worth the extra £3.99?" and "Which LED fan should I get - red, blue or green?". :p

No problem, and great choice :) To answer your questions, "nothing apart from SLI/CF support", "no", and "blue, all the most powerful computers are blue". Hope this helps :D
