I thought it was fairly conclusively shown that the 590's going up in smoke were a result of some pesky reviewers deliberately going well beyond the voltage limits, using the inflammatory videos as link-bait.

^^^
No it wasn't, they blew up at stock as well, one user on this forum even posted the pic's of his dead 590, which he strongly confirmed was running stock.

It's just a component to prevent it going up in smoke. I doubt it will have any effect.

well if they put a whole £20's worth of better quality VRM's on the card, as in an appropriate amount for 2xgf110's, then they thing could finally be safe to overclock to "proper" 580gtx speeds, and potentially even higher.

Doesn't sound like they are doing that, which is very weird, better quality VRM's and a 3rd party triple slot cooler from MSI or someone and the thing shouldn't have any issue doing 850-900Mhz on both cores, safely, at decent temps and noise and being a ridiculously good card.

Theres better value cards out now, but the point is to be able to say the 590gtx is good, rather than a complete waste of time. Its insanely stupid to skimp on VRM's which massively limits the cards potential. Nvidia flat out lied about power usage anyway, so who really cares if it used another 100W, officially, tell the world it uses 50W, a lie is a lie, it doesn't really matter how big of a lie it is.

IT sounds like rather than put in proper VRM's, they are putting in a real hardware limit that physically prevents the VRM's using enough power to fry themselves.

6990 is £100 cheaper and doesn't go up in smoke, why should anyone consider nvidia? and new cards from amd will probably be out about the same time.

New cards from AMD out at the same time? what cards are we talking about here or is it just what you think with nothing to back it up.

Should have released working models to compete with AMD when the time was right.

That's not to say that the AMD's card wasn't the loudest of the lot either.

We're living in the times where the absolute high-end is for enthusiast only as it has no real-world use in games any more.

Damn consoles, holding us "true gamers" back :p

Hit the nail on the proverbal head there, why do we need this much graphics processor power to run a console ported game?
