Living In Bradford

Its not actually that bad - It does have it's share of rough neighbourhoods, but so do many cities. As already mentioned, stay away from Lidget Green, and probably the central are in general. Saltaire, Nab Wood areas are nice, Shipley isn't so bad, neither's Bingley, and if you don't mind getting a train in or commuting a bit longer, then Skipton and Ilkley are nice places. There are nicer bits hidden around further in as well - there are some bits around Heaton that are actually quite nice... It's not a bad place to live in general - there is plenty of nice countryside very nearby, and there's Leeds nearby for your nights out or if you want some more shops... Sure there are some crime issues and so on, but it varies a lot from area to area.

As for the city centre, there are a few shops and stuff, a cinema, bowling etc a bit further out. not a great variety of shops or anything else, but it's OK... If you want more shopping or nights out then pop over to Leeds, or jump on the train somewhere else.

I live in a village near Bingley, and it's fine there - nice landscape, morning drive in isn't too bad. I don't really know much about the state schools, but I think they are generally poor.

There are some nice areas in Bradford. Like pretty much any city in England...it has its fair share of dumps. Don't think it's quite as bad as it's made out to be, there are definitely worse places to live.
Yep, agree.

Troll much? Well done for naming the worst places in Bradford...

?? What Oak Lane is a wonderful place to live. You've got Lister Park, voted the best park in the UK or was it all of Europe. A whole range of places to eat, one of the best schools in the country - Bradford Grammar School, variety of transport, near to the busy city center, huge houses, Police Station (so safe) and finally a lovely community!!

What more do you want?

Oak Lane being the face of the Bradford Riots, crime ridden and does not contain a 'multicultural' atmosphere. It's one of the worst places in Bradford IMHO.

The place where they burned a BMW garage down and a set of shops. Yes, nice place?

Thanks everyone.

There is plenty for me to check out. I'm heading there in a few weeks so will have a look at some of the places suggested. I might end up staying in Leeds as it should also be a good base for me.

"does not contain a 'multicultural' atmosphere" whats that supposed to mean?

Bradford riots happened donkeys ago, you still hung up on that? Theres a nice shopping complex there now!

Crime ridden? There's a police station literally a 100 yards away...

One word, Mumtaz!!! If you like your curries that is. Not been since about 2007 but it was a quality curry back then and believe me, I've been to some good curry houses, including Lasan in Birmingham and a host of curry houses in India and other Asian countries!

Sorry, I just showed your post to a fellow Bradfordian. He burst out laughing.
If you honestly think Oak Lane is a nice place to live, you really, haven't lived. Howarth/Saltaire/Wilsden must make you jizz in your pants if you think Oak Lane is a nice place.

Bradford Riots happened 10 years ago. Oak Lane is scarred by them. The police station was already there when the Bradford Riots happened, but that didn't help the burning down of buildings just down the road.

A nice shopping complex? A NICE shopping complex!? Please tell me of some nice clothing shops and authentic italian restaurants on Oak Lane.

I fit some barbers units in a barbers shop on the outskirts of bradford last year I would not like to live there and im from burnley !!

Although the kashmere curry house is fantastic.

I lived there for a few months and I really didnt like it at all ( lived in Wibsey ), the place just looks horrible, all the buildings are covered in soot or somthing from the mills years ago, a very depressing place indeed, Leeds is better but I still wouldnt want to live there.

Lol Saltaire, was opening bowler of the Saltaire cricket team a few years ago, also went to college there. If you think Saltaire's a good place to live you must live in a skip. Whats special about Saltaire? its full of old white people, zombie town, unbelievably boring...

Pervinder who cares about Italian restaurants when your in curry central Bradford ??. Who gives a **** about itialian restournets when you've got Raja's, Yazzi's Pizza (could be classed as italian but would be pushing it :D), Lister Fisheries

Dude 10 ******* years, get over it...

You still haven't explained "does not contain a 'multicultural' atmosphere"

Edit:

Shana Gulbars Fashion is a well respected asian clothing shop

Firstly, I am sorry to say that my name is not Pervinder. I am not a Sikh.

So you think cheap, tacky takeaways make a place a really nice place to live? We obviously have opposing opinions. Raja's is NASTY, and Yazzi is not Italian. This article sums up my thoughts as to it not being a multicultural atmosphere. I used to walk on Oak Lane as a kid with my grandma every week. Now, I feel hostility if I walk upon this road. Someone was knived a few months ago on Oak Lane. Not very safe, and doesn't integrate well into the surrounding area.

Another vote for Leeds, I've had friends of mine move to Bradford, and they all come crawling back a couple years later with a nervous twitch and a permafrown. No offence to the natives here, if it's your home town and you have lots of family and friends I'm sure it's just as nice as anywhere else, but if you're just moving there and hardly know anybody then you're really depending on the town having a lively social scene and stuff actually happening in order to have any semblance of a life.

If you want advice on where in Leeds, post a few more details (budget, whether you have a car, where you'll be working, what sort of place you'd like to live etc)

oh so its not a good place to live because theres muslims living there?... its not like its full of Indians so should be OK. Whats cheap n tacky about Yazzis? its a quality italian pizzeria. Name me one fine italian Restaurant in saltaire if thats what you use to qualify an area being nice, heck dont think theres any designer shops either ....

No, its like what you said about Saltaire being full of old white people. It's OK for you to say that? Also, your racism against Indians is not acceptable here on OCUK.

Automatically you assume that I'm against Muslims, which is not the case. I'm talking about the hostility/lack of integration and danger of that area. In BD9, we have Muslim neighbours on our street, heck the Muslims who rented out the house next door, we cooked food for each other to share each other's traditional foods. Now THAT is called integration, not what you get on Oak Lane.

Yazzis is an ITALIAN PIZZERIA? Dear oh dear....I am out of words. It's a pizza diner takeaway.

Da Tonino is in ease of walk from Saltaire. A beautiful italian restaurant. Nothing comparable within the Manningham area.

Wait and Oak Lane does have designer shops? Please, stop making me laugh! Tell me you're trolling :)

You play? a few of my team mates used to play for the dragons, and were playing in that tournament a few weeks ago :) Never actually been personally

Yes. It was on the first may bank holiday. You should come down next time, some good talent plus the nights out are pretty fun...
