Is it possible to pair a 6950 2gig and a 1gig version together in xfire without any problems? Thanks.

Well yes, I'm wrong but you answer the question the same?

No, you answered it differently.

The 2GB card will always be RECOGNISED (your words not mine) as a 2GB card.

Just because only 1GB will be addressable when crossfired (disable crossfire and you'd re-gain 2GB of addressable video memory, regardless of the 1GB card being present in the system), doesn't mean the card is only recognised as 1GB.

I answered correctly stating that when xfired they will only be recognised as having 1GB ram..

:(Yet again, in this forum you answer a question to op and told you are wrong but three times the answer is the same:

When in xfire only 1GB will be available.

Although the other guy is being a total troll he has a point, the cards are recognised as 2gb and 1gb, not that it adds anything to what your post said....

So if I trifire x2 2gb cards with 1 1gb card it will only use 3gb VRAM?

It will use 1GB from each card but that's not the same as having 3GB.

Effectively you will have 1GB of VRAM and the processing power of three GPU's.

If you had three 2GB cards then effectively you have 2GB not 6GB.

So I have got my hands on another 6950 1Gb is it worth dropping this in as is, or get another 2Gb version and run trifire?

What do you have now 2x2GB or a 2GB and a 1GB?

Would a third card fit with that motherboard and case?

Usually when you require the extra GPU power from a 2nd GPU, you are looking forward to enable high AA under high resolution with high graphics settings. In such cases, 1GB vram per GPU is no longer a good solution.

Reading your sig. further you have 2x2GB cards.

There's no point in adding a 1GB card and effectively halving your VRAM.

I'm also pretty certain that a third card wouldn't fit.

No it won't fit in this case, but I am looking at getting a new one. I currently have x2 2gb 6950's unlocked, I have Rma'd my dicky 5970 and got x2 6950 1 gb cards in return. I have a home for one, but the other 1 Gb card I was looking at dropping in my current setup as I play in eyefinity with most games. Bit strange that only half the total memory available is adressed currently..

That's how Crossfire and SLI work.

Each card uses it's own VRAM, they're not added together to make one large amount shared by all the cards.

I would sell the 6950 1GB while it's still young.
