I was just wondering does anyone turn their PC off at the wall at night? Or do some people even turn their PC off!?

I have a tendency to turn things off at the wall at night! I'm not sure why! Usually I turn my PC, amp, TV etc off at the wall at night, leaving only the router on.

Does anyone else do this? Am I actually achieving anything other than saving some small, small amounts of energy? Is it safer or does it cause any damage to the equipment being turned on and off at the wall every day?

Strange question but it was just something I was thinking about!

Some would say it's safer. Greater fire prevention.

Me, I leave everything on. Perhaps in the vain hope that a fire will start during the night and finally put an end to my misery.

Never turn it off at the wall, but always try and turn all the usual appliances off at night as opposed to letting them go into stand by

Yes, I don't see why you wouldn't if its not being used.

Computer, tv, sky box..anything really other than router downstairs.

My mums partner does this, drives me mad!

When we stay up there and go to use the TV it doesn't work. Then I remember he turns it off at the wall, so a quick flick and the TV's on. Come back an hour later and he's turned it off again!

We also set mum up with a wireless router to go with the laptop we bought her, but again the router is always turned off. Only comes on for the few minutes he goes online!

Yet the heating is on full blast most of the time

There's no point really is there? If you leave it on at the wall it just fills an empty circuit which never reaches the device and probably doesn't consume a noticeable power draw. I do love the uproar about leaving things on standby, as in reality you're wasting the draw to keep an LED running..

I leave my PCs (and even my MBP) plugged in all night, but then they're also switched on. I don't see the point in turning off a PC, especially since half of them run servers of one kind or another anyway.

My fiancée on the other hand 'has to' unplug everything in sight before bed, else she can't sleep because the house might burn down. Or something. But to be fair when she was a child her house DID burn down, but then again it was her older brother smoking in bed who started it so she has no excuse I say. :p

The only thing worth turning off at the wall is a Sky box as they sit there recording crappy Anytime TV overnight when on standby.

The only reason I dont is because they take a bloody age to start up again.
