Hi guys, I need to upgrade my ram, currently have 6x1gb corsair xms3, which does fit under the heatsink. However I need to upgrade to 12gb, and would rather 3x4gb to leave me the option of further upgrading.

My machine is an i7 920 overclocked to around 3.8ghz. So, looking at corsair vengeance, those silly heatsinks will get in the way, and I can't seem to find any 3x4gb kits of xms3 at 1600mz? I assume I need semi fast ram to support the overclock, is this the case?

Thanks for reading, any suggestions welcome!

[edit] I forgot to ask if 1333 MHz ram is insufficient for my overclock or if there's not really any difference?

Looks like OcUK are out of stock at the moment. The only memory i know of that have low profile heatsinks and in 3x4GB is Corsair Memory XMS3 12GB DDR3 2000 Mhz CAS 9 Triple Channel CMX12GX3M3A2000C9. Not too sure about your overclock request but i presume you could just overclock the cpu only if you know what you're doing?, someone else may be able to help a bit more with that?.

Thanks for the reply.

I have looked at the 2000MHz memory, though it is significantly more expensive (roughly £40-50) than the Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz- for the privilege of not having a heatsink and a little more speed that probably won't make any difference?

I've already oc'd my CPU/RAM in it's current configuration, I was just wondering if having slower RAM would likely severely limit my overclock..

If it's of any relevance I'm a 3D artist. (trying to keep costs down as I'm trying to blag a vertex 3 SSD while I'm at it)

i'd suggest looking at some mushkin ram, you can customise almost every aspect of the ram and order exactly what you want :)

It depends on what orientation you are planning to mount the cooler in, I have dominator gt ram with a D-14 and if I mount the cooler vertically, I can fit the ram with the heatsinks attached, but it really is close (about a 0.5mm gap I can't believe it fitted), I'm guessing that it is dependanat on the motherboard your using. Though the ram cooler doesn't fit with the cooler in either orientation.

Hope that helps

Cheers
