Turning things off at the wall!

We've got remote controls so we don't have to get up and flick a switch to turn things on! As such I don't unplug things from the wall or turn things off at the wall.

I only do that if I go away for prolonged periods of time - just makes sense since I won't be using it - however, as part of my day to day living it's too much hassle and pointless.

wasn't there a guy on here who knocked his fishtank light off when he left the house to save money lol.

Tv and all the av stuff all on standby can't really get to the plug without pulling the tv and stand out everynight so sod that, see when you power your pc down, but the psu is still putting power to the motherboard as the led light is still on the mb,does this come off the hours the capacitors lifetime which on my board says on the box 5000 hours.:(

I leave my PCs (and even my MBP) plugged in all night, but then they're also switched on.

I have had 2 MBP power adapters that overheated massively so just watch that.

Another tip..... if one is faulty you can't open it to fix unless you break it open. If you do, don't put it back together with hot glue. Mine is currently spunked all over my mates couch. Lol!

No the rated lifetime is based on them being under load i.e. when your system is actually running.

I turn everything off at the wall. But I run on a laptop so that just stops the light. No need for a monitor to be on and turning the hard drives off stops them whirring up randomly thinking they have a super-important job to do...

The only thing worth turning off at the wall is a Sky box as they sit there recording crappy Anytime TV overnight when on standby.

The only reason I dont is because they take a bloody age to start up again.

If you register for the new Anytime on Skys website it'll not do that. It transforms anytime into a download service over the internet, like iPlayer.

I leave everything on, except when going on holiday, because everyone knows that as soon as you go on holiday, the lamp that has been plugged in for months with the switch on will suddenly spontaneously combust.

Everything is left on, apart from the Electric cooker in the kitchen. We are yet to go away for a long period, but if we were going away for 1 - 2 weeks I would probabally turn off at the plug just for piece of mind...and I guess the small saving we have on not having things on standby when no one is there

Never turn anything of at the wall and never will until I get something like the x10 network, then it can control all my power and heating. Looking forward to see what android@home automation will be doing, hopping it will bring the price down. However with such a system I wonder what the overheads are and how much it actually saves. Would still be cool to have regardless.

I'm a firm believer that technology should over come inefficiencies, rather than us being inconvenienced.

I do because I have an ethernet switch in my room that doesn't need to be on overnight which is connected to the power strips that my rig is connected to. Lots of other LED's of things on standby which simply don't need to be on overnight too.

My mrs turns off the kettle and toaster at the wall, drives me insane

I've poured 2 cups of cold tea this month

Now I've resorted to blu-tacking drawing pins to the plug switches on both :D

I looked at having X10 in my home build and the costs just aren't worth the savings. It is cool though :D

I'm hopping android will bring the costs down. It needs mass production behind it. It just seems totally skipped over by the public, who see it as a gimmick rather than something useful.

Would love a button I can press that turns everything off, including heating when I go to work.
Or heating that is based on my work Callander(shift work). Or a dimmer light that slowly comes on over half an hour before my alarm goes off. Got a grow box in my room and lights come on at 6 makes such a difference. So for me it's not just energy saving.
