She claims she was just browsing facebook and all of a sudden a couple of boxes appeared claiming we weren't protected, suggesting that we purchase Windows 7 security or something, that the PC state was INFECTED etc. I ran a McAfee scan, it found 1 virus and a couple of cookies and removed them.

The problem I now have is that every time I attempt to open anything I get the option,

choose the option you want to open this file then I get a security warning and the option to run, save, cancel etc.

Anyone know what's going on?

PS if this isn't in the correct forum, apologies and please move, thanks

A variation of this got my dads PC, ran many different programs, nothing would solve it, eventually I used Windows Restore and it actually fixed it.

It's basically a new version of " Xp antivirus ", it pops up and claims your system is infected. You click the X or close and then it decides to take over your system and tell you that your system is so badly infected you should register the software.

MalwareBytes should take care of it!

It's a horrible virus , some have been known to screw with your system restore too

It won't let me open it once I download it.

Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key just before the window's loading screen and choose boot up in safe-mode with networking. You need networking enabled to connect to the internet to update the anti-virus software.

some of the adverts on facebook are infected by this stuff, ive clicked one by accident before and it starts up java and installs it :\

OK it's getting late, I'll have another look in the morning and try safe mode etc. thanks for the advice so far fellas.

Incidentally you don't get these kinda infections going on facebook and the BBC mate so your girlfriend was almost certainly browsing some pornage. Hot.

Really? What was the advert for?

Malwarebyes in safe mode and it just came back constantly, I tried other tools too. The only way I actually got rid of it was by deleting everything I could with malwarebytes then system restoring.

I'd go down the system restore option. Brothers gf got 1 of these ridiculous things on my mums laptop. It completely hijacked everything claiming the computer was infected and needed to be scanned, it replaced the wallpaper, blocked task manager, everything.

Started in safe mode, ran system restore to the furthest back date it had to be sure.

OP, I had this a while back. It's a PITA.

The .exe of the virus changes every time it opens to something random. Open Task Manager and sort-by memory usage. That'll find the bugger.

Here's what I did to get rid of it:

1. Safe Mode
2. System Restore
3. Full Anti-Virus Scan, etc.

BTW some variants of this get right through internet explorer and chrome (despite the hype from some people its not really that much more secure than IE imo). The only way to stop it is using task manage to stop the browser process when the popup comes up, any option including using the close button results in infection.
