Core i7 860 (2.8GHz) CPU/8M

Hi there

Is your current system the one in your sig?

If so, and you aren't already running a LGA 1156 system then I would strongly recommend going for a sandy bridge i5 or i7 K series CPU and a P67 board instead of going for old tech like the nahalem i7 860.

May I ask what you mainly use your PC for?

Thanks, yes in my signature it is an old system
I didn't know i7 860 is an old tech, have been away from the PC market for a long time.

Use it for games, and also some hobby graphics drawing like ray tracing.

Ah, in that case I would have a look at the new sandy bridge LGA 1155 CPUs and boards. The best value at the moment is the OEM i5 2500K CPU, this RAM and this board (which does overclocking and supports SLI and crossfireX). You will also need a CPU cooler as the CPU doesn't come with one, I would suggest this one as it is good value, quiet and will allow you to do a fair bit of overclocking.

This comparison shows how the i5 2500K stacks up to your current Q6600 at stock speeds.

But then are the K series a performance trim down version? I really like a fast system for games like DCS A-10 and Black Shark. I want complete smooth ness playing these games.

Have you tried overclocking your Q6600 to unlock free performance first?
Not going to be worlds apart, but may keep you going for a while. :)

Not at all, infact quite the opposite. "K" chips are multiplier unlocked for overclocking ease.

Thanks! Good to know. Now I've got the right direction.

No! I've never done that actually. My graphics card is far too inferior to DCS Black Shark or DCS A-10 anyway.
Besides, the Raedon is really a hot chip, too hot for even ordinary operation under Summer's time room temperature without air-conditioner.

I'm hoping to build a new system with the i3/5/7 chip, and I also want to deploy a new graphics card with less heat dissipation, what you recommend?

Thanks
Peter
