I have just sold my car. I originally bought it without service history but low mileage, hoped it had been looked after and took it for a major service as soon as I bought it.

As I was selling it I tried to track down some service history for the new owners but this backfired. After selling I received confirmation that it did have history but up to a higer mileage :(

I originally bought the car from a dealer (he had taken it in as a part exchange). I don't believe it was the dealer who 'clocked' it, but not sure where I stand.

Am I obliged to inform the new owner? Can I pursue the trader - I have been advised that a trader would have been expected to track down the service history if I managed to?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Why didn't you try and track down history when you bought it? Didn't sound too difficult?

Not a leg with the dealer I'm afraid unless you have a receipt stating the mileage you bought it on. Who's to say you did clock it?

It's the risk you take with no history. How much clocking are we talking about? As you say I wouldnt have thought the dealer did it, surely he'd get more money for a high mileage car than one with no history??

I managed to get the history through the ex lease company. I tried to do this originally but was told it was confidential.

I do have a receipt from the trader stating mileage and also the first MOT showing low mileage. It was hpi clear as all done before first MOT.

if you've sold it your a private individual - not a trader so cannot held be accountable. The unhelpful comments here about "why didn't you check it when you bought it" apply to the new owners as well.

At the end of the day, you sold it in good faith so can rest easy. Just forget about finding the service history for the new owners. If they've paid and collected it i doubt they'll chase you too much. Let them do their own research.

Wow major mis-read whilst half asleep on the train this morning!

Didn't realise you've already sold it! In which case **** it! :p

Id say if youve allready sold it,life goes on.
Theres a bum for every seat.If its a private sale its down to the buyer to get an HPI done and a Mileage check.

I wouldn't worry about it unless of course you did "clock" it :)
When you bought it no doubt you either got it MOT'd by the dealer or with some MOT still left and therefore a MOT certificate with mileage on. You would then have MOT certificates (if you had it long enough) that you had obtained from MOT's. What im saying is that "you" would have a tracable mileage history of the car during your ownership. Im guessing any discrepencies that you found would be obvious upto the point of you buying it.
