AA memebership - what level cover do you have?

As mentioned it might be worth checking if your bank offers cover as part of your account package - mine gives me Green Flag cover which seems to be decent when I've needed to use it, they've never quibbled about coming to my home address and they arrived about as fast as the AA did. I believe they do tend to use local breakdown companies for the service though so I don't know what the quality is like across the country.

I have the super pimp daddy Greenflag one.

Last thing I would want is to be stuck somewhere with the only option being a horrendous garage towing fee for 10 minutes work.

Irrelevent as I do not beleive in the con that is premium bank accounts - so I save money by purchasing what i need seperately.

Totally and utterly agree with this.

Ok?
iPhone 4 insurance £10pm?
Separate home emergency cover, £6pm?
AA Cover (full package), £10-£15pm?

That is a minimum of £26pm for just those 3 things.
I pay £25pm and get all of those, plus travel insurance, Identity theft protection, interest free overdraft and protection for all my cards if they are stolen. All nice and conveniently taken in 1 payment from my account each month. How is that a rip off?
I have claimed on my phone insurance, 2 weeks after I got my iPhone it was stolen. Home emergency cover was great. They came & repaired my boiler, it would have cost £800 but I didn't spend a penny. And between me & my misses we used AA 7 times in the year (before I got my VXR). Each time having to be towed more than 80 miles.

How is the account a rip off?

If you live with your family, get the family cover and encourage them to pay in too, it works out cheaper.

I have the Basic + Recovery, so I can be recovered if I break down. I paid £146 which covers me (and my motorbike), my dad, my mum and my sisters cars. This is personal cover, so it covers us individually, no matter what vehicle we're in so you can't get stranded.

Exactly what we have, however I don't pay for it :D

Just breakdown cover, IIRC. It's through my bank, pay enough every month for the damn thing. It's probably the only benefit I use other than the highly limited travel insurance.

Same here, have used it a couple of times, I actually cancelled my AA subscription and moved to this one.

Only when you deliberately inflate the expected cost of them to convince yourself you are getting a better deal than you really are. £15 a month for AA cover? Thats almost 200 quid! You can get a comprehensive AA package for circa £50-70 a year through Quidco!

So circa £5 a month.

Mobile phone insurance? The best thing to do here is simply not bother - its a mobile phone not a car, you insure things you cannot afford to replace not cheap electronic goods. Just don't lose them. Though, even if you do, you are probably still better off without insurance. I've had high end phones for 11 years now - even if I throw my phone off a cliff tommorrow and pay full RRP for a new one I'm still better off without insurance!

But, if you really do think you are unable to not lose an item that stays on your person at all times, you can pick it up for about £6 a month.

Worldwide travel insurance, 25 quid on Moneysupermarket so £2 a month.

Home Emergency cover, less than a tenner a month if you shop around.

So for those things we are at £18 a month, not £25 a month. Identify Theft protection is free with certain credit cards as is card protection. An interest free overdraft is readily available, for free, for anyone with a half decent credit rating.

How is that a rip off?

See above. You are paying your bank £300 a year for stuff which you either do not need or could get yourself for less money!

But thanks for subsidising the banking costs for those of us who do bother to shop around :p

Well, quidco doing £21 cash back for the breakdown cover, or £42 cash back if spent between £75-100, which means national cover can be had for £40 odd a year?

Like it would seem a few of you, I switch between RAC and Quidco each year for cashback. I have national recovery & homestart.

Find me iPhone 4 insurance for £6pm that covers everything!
Please also find me a full AA cover, including all options apart from the repair guarantee that covers me & my misses for £5 rolling. So not Quidco, as that is first year only.

You can't ask for £5 rolling forever, as we can't predict the deals of the future similar to how you can't predict the future cost of your banking product. There is a very very very high chance that all of your products can be found, elsewhere, better tailored to you, for less money. All a bank has over you is economy of scale savings, and they aren't likely to be larger than their profit margin on the premium account.

I used to have a premium bank account.. then I realised it was crap, and have saved the cost of it each month since.

Same, my mum wanted to buy me break down cover as my motorbike is 11 years old and I'm always a fair distance from home. It worked out to have Relay it was going to be £70 for me alone, so I looked at the family/joint options and we worked out it was about £30 each, which is a decent price for the whole year!

There are plenty.

Neither beat the plan of simply looking after your phone though. How the heck do you manage to let people steal your phone anyway? Do you leave it unattended or something? It's hardly a car or something where its very nature means you often leave it unattended!

Why wouldnt you want to re-evaluate each year to ensure you are getting good value? Simply cancel and sign up again if you wish to remain with them.

Premium current accounts are a con.

You're not just covered against theft though, you're covered against loss and accidental damage. While I appreciate the point that a) looking after your phone will mitigate most risks and b) not paying for phone insurance will probably over time mean that you have saved the price of replacing the handset anyway it's not just about people being careless and having their phones stolen. I didn't bother with phone insurance for years even though I'd usually have a decent handset but since it's part of the fee I'm paying for the bank account anyway I might as well register the handset (or two as I believe it covers up to two).

It's less hassle is one reason, I pay a fixed amount every month and I get covered for some things I would have chosen to purchase anyway and as a "bonus" I get covered for some things I wouldn't go out of my way to get in the ordinary run of things - some of the features I don't use at the moment but that I can use them in the future is potentially of benefit because I'm now aware that I don't need a separate cover. Maybe I could get a better deal if I chose to hunt around the deals but then again if I factor in the time and inconvenience to me of doing this (it's not my idea of fun) the difference is not worth it from my point of view.

I'm not recommending premium current accounts for everyone, I am however saying I don't think it's always as clear cut as you make out.

You haven't done what I asked, you haven't proven what you said.
Please provide the the proof to backup what you said.

My contents insurance covers everything for an extra £40pa - so £3.33 a month

That wouldn't cover unauthorised calls and probably a handful of other things.
