Hi guys,

Was looking through my Grandads garage and found some old and interesting items.

I came across on tin in particular that took my interest. It was an old sea salt tin with 'scrap platinum' written on it. Theres about 500g - 1000g of the stuff all cut, bent and mishapen. Its not hallmarked but im pretty sure it is was it says it is. I immediatley showed it to my Grandad and explained how valuable it is and he should sell it. He agreed to sell it and said he would give me half of what he gets for it. The question is where can you sell it and how much is it actually worth and is it worth doing?

Thanks guys.

Depending on the Purity .. if its 850 platinum its £25/g if its 999 Platinum its £29/g But with it being a sea salt tin i cant imagine it being that pure. Would it?

Diamond Mark is your man, maybe send him a trust message.

If there really is 500g to 1kg then you are about to come into a good chunk of money based on my 20 seconds of internet research

It wont be a 1kg of pure platinum thought will it, if its industrial platinum, surely its plated over the top and will only be about 5gms???

It wont be a kilo will it. It has to be plated. Gold or platinum rings are a ring of pure gold or platinum, what industrial use would there be in a piece of pure platinum? That would cost a fortune.
It will be a inner metal plated with platinum to keep it from rusting, used as a electrical conductor, or catalyser. It will be usually only a few microns thick at best. If it were melted down it would probably be a few grams.

try goldline.co.uk
very reliable company that have their own refinery - i doubt anybody will be able to match their price.

assuming it is actually platinum.

where did he get it from? not many industries work with chunks of platinum.

i've just checked out this website -very poor prices given, avoid.
Baird (goldline) will give you more.

Probably, it was just an example from the first google of scrap platinum, and also to youur other point which I think i've said about 5 times now. It wont be chunks of platinum.

Kind of what I was thinking...

its possible. if he worked in the scientific area he could have easily come across large amounts of pure platinum - 50 years ago platinum was very very cheap compared to now and was used in large amounts all the time (electrodes, wire, crucibles etc...)
