Tooth removal with sedation.

Not sure what level of sedation you're having, but I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed in hospital a couple of years ago under general anaesthetic. I don't mind the dentists, so would have agreed to them being removed under a local, but two of the teeth hadn't actually grown in yet (X-Rays showed they were coming in at dodgy angles though), so the gums had to be cut to allow removal.

I remember right up to the point of lying on the table, having a tube connected to the IV line in the back of my hand, felt a cold sensation going up my arm, then waking up in recovery. Not sure what else they pumped in there, but I felt great! The pain did hit me the next day though - I think I lived on soup and paracetamol for a week due to having a mega swollen throat from whatever they stuffed down it.

Certainly wouldn't hesitate to have a general again if I needed something similar doing - was over in literally a flick of a switch. :)

Here's a hint - don't google for images of tooth removal. :(

I felt the colour drain from my face when I saw some of the pictures.

Requires a hospital environment.
There are absolutely no practices licenced to do generals anymore, not for 15 years since the death of that wee scottish lassie.
General's have inherent risk associated with them, which tends to be lessened in a proper practice that does i-v's properly.

O_o they still do it over here last I went, I went about 5 years ago mind but it was an anesthesiologist from the hospital. It was over an hour& a half of work so screw being concious for that.

All my dentist visits have been agonising pain, even with sedatives which didn't do a bloody thing, maybe there are newer better drugs out to deal with it.

Worst thing for me is that when I was a little younger, they wanted to use some local anaesthetic, injected it into my gums and then I had the most allmighty shock of pain, what I can only assume was the needle hitting a nerve dead on, and the needle snapped... in my gums. It was there for what felt like eternity, until they got it out. Whatever happened, it hurt more than anything I can remember.

It's why I no longer want injections in my mouth, I trust they can do the job but not my mouth and what seems to be, ultra sensitive :(

Just got back from my visit. They used a numbing 'bubblegum' gel on my gums, then 2-3 injections each side of local anaesthetic. Tooth was a bugger to get out due to location and the roots were crooked.

Am slowly regaining feeling in my mouth, tongue and lips, along with the taste of blood. Nom

Interesting question if you're concious though it but don't remember it after does it matter if it hurts?

I.e you're sedated then operated on , it's agonisingly painful but once it's done you wont remember it, to you it'll be as though it never happened despite you experiencing it.

Would you mind?
They'll always make sure you don't feel pain though because at the time of feeling the pain you'll react, making it difficult for them to work.

Didn't even know they were allowed to sedate you! I had a molar out with just injection in my mouth (same stuff you have for a filling). Dentist was basically stood on my chest anf yanking it out; took about 15 minutes.

Didn't feel a thing (apart from the foot in my chest) and the satisfaction of having the tooth out was almost as good as the relief from a dump!

You guys are missing out by being asleep trust me :)

Had a wisdom tooth out before, wasn't even given sedation as an option, not that I'd take it anyway.

I actually enjoyed the feeling of getting the tooth pulled out, knowing that the toothache I'd been having for days would finally come to an end.

It doesn't even hurt, the only slightly uncomfortable bit was the injection right at the back of my jaw, where the needle seemed to go all the way through to my ear canal.

usually given midazolam IV'd, get an amazing rush then KO, teeth out, you wake up feeling fine. this is for things which would be extremely uncomfortable using just numbing agents in the mouth, the harder things to get out are where they sedate you.

and to the idiots saying benzos are toxic, they have no harmful effect on the human body, they are only dangerous (as in EXTREMELY DANGEROUS) when taken long term, as withdrawing from them can cause seizures and is similar to alcohol detoxicing, but one time only at the dentist will do no harm at all.

(info from horrible painful expereiences in my life :()

Having a tooth out whilst conscious is the worst experience in the world.

agreed.

i remember having gas to be put to sleep when i was a kid to have teath out for my adult teach to come through and when i woke up i as kicking and punching the dentist. i did land a few kicks to the face too :p but i still got my sticker :)

Glad to hear it. Midazolam rocks amirite? :D Don't rush into taking solids, thick milkshakes are your friend (provided they're not too cold) as they help make you feel full, and if you smoke try not to as dry sockets are a biatch. :o I'm sure you know this though. You'll be healed in no time, congrats on getting it over with hehe.

I had a molar out yesterday, didnt get knocked out just a jab to numb it
the injection in the roof of my mouth was the worst part
the actual extraction didnt hurt at all

wierd holey thing in my jaw is a bit odd today too

Just came back from having two molars out.
