GPU heatsink held by thermal paste, no screws?

As shown in the title, is this possible? A seller from a popular auction site is saying that this is what he has done, as the heatsink has moved slightly so he can't really screw it in, but he applied new thermal paste. Is this possible? Or will it even last?

a normal thermal paste will not hold a heat sink on think of it like a grease it would just slide off, after a long time coolers can get stuck on if its been on there years but you can just give a small tug and it would fall off. but a normal paste would never hold a heat sink on

Ohnoezfail, I hope you're not considering purchasing the card in question. Even if it is the bargain of the century, what if you find the heatsink he's using has in fact been epoxied on and it's a bits pants at keeping things cool. You're going to find it hard to remove it and put a better cooler on there.

That's true, although it's listed that the card idles at 57-60c in his system, and reaches 85c on load, so hmm, and he's also sending the screws along with it. Yeah, it is a pretty good deal, but still, I'm also weary.

I'd be asking why has the heatsink moved in the first place, it all seems a bit dodgey to me. It would have to be a major bargain for me to consider it, I'd only go for it if you don't mind taking the gamble.

It's a 2nd 8800gtx :p I'm a student and I don't really have much to fork out, but still, rather interesting and tempting, and he also gave this with the description/specs of the card:

"EVGA 8800GTX, this is a card I've had sitting in its box for weeks doing nothing, before putting it on here I've cleaned it all out, and replaced the thermal paste with arctic silver to make sure it keeps cool! Its missing 3 screws because of this, I didn't want to screw them into the PCB as the heatsink allignment has slightly moved over time. The 3 screws will be shipped with the card as they weren't lost, they aren't important and do not hold the heatsink tight against the GPU so you can be assured this will not be a problem! I'm just been as honest as possible, check my feedback and please send an e-mail if unsure."
