Is it worth Overclocking?

Ok so I'll start by posting my System Specs.

CPU: Pentium (R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @2.5GHz
(Current clock speed: 1200Mhz
Max clock speed: 2500Mhz
1.2V)

GPU: HIS Radeon HD 4850 HD 1GB

RAM: Corsair 2x2GB

Motherboard: Asus P5KPL-AM

PSU: Not sure about the make and stuff, think its like 500W though. Will check.

Colling Device: Just 2 regular fans :o

Well, I want to overclock my CPU and GPU. Is it worth OCing them, or will the power given by these not be worth the effort? Also, will the heat coming out of them be tooo high, and thus damage my system? I also have another small problem, that I only have 3-4 cm from the edge of my case to the nearest wall, is that too little??

If you give me the green light, I need DETAILED instructions to do this. Do you know any good free programs to calculate temperature etc.

Thanks :)

P.S. Yes, I know there are MANY threads about this, but it seems to me that every person has his own problems etc.

that mobo has very limited overclocking options and no cpu voltage option, my wife had one a bit ago, you might be lucky and get 1-200mhz but i had no luck on it tbh.

It is worth overclocking the cpu to 3Ghz +....

RealTemp will do CPU and GPU temps.

Don't bother trying to overclock the CPU on that motherboard, but by all means give the GPU a go.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

3GHz CPU sounds nice!

Also, instructions, anyone? Please :D

EDIT: Downloaded RealTemp. There is 2 temperatures, is that CPU and GPU?

Also, both are around 40, is that normal, or is it too high?

I would agree that the CPU is worth overclocking to 3GHz+, but I don't think that board will do it with the tweaking options available.

i guess it would be a stock cooler too,

i'd lidten to the guy who's wife had it as he knows from experience, plus stock coolers aren't of any good for overclocking

Hmm, so it doesn't sound too favorable then. Oh well, at least I did try :p 3GHz sounded soo good at the time :P

Yeh, stock fans I guess. And as I said, I don't have too much space for air to move around.

So, seems like we concluded that its a NO for the CPU. Gpu, anyone?

EDIT: I downloaded that temperature program, but I think it only shows CPU temperature :/

With reference to getting GPU temps in RealTemp.

Click the settings tab, select ATI, apply and ok.

If you want it to display in system tray, click the relivent Show Icon box.

If you don't have much airflow through your case, i guess they are ok.

Btw, its temps under load that matter the most.

Nearly nothing :( REALLY considering moving it to near my feet so I get a tad more airflow, even if I won't be able to move my feet around :P

And yeh I know, but atm, I can't play, gotta revise :P So I can't test temp.

Cleaned up the dust from the vents (there was A LOT. Even opened PSU to clean the PSU fan) and moved the CPU location and temperatures when idle (never tested temperatures when playing) went down drastically! Cores went down 7/8 degrees, and are standing at 33. GPU went down by 3/4 and is sitting at 43. Not bad if you ask me.

Still the question. Worth OCing or no?

e5200 used to hit around 3.2ghz on stock voltage so motherboard shouldnt be much of a problem here as long as the temps are ok. Just go into BIOS and crank up the FSB to 233 but don't forget to unlink the memory off the CPU if it's linked so you don't mess the ram speed up for now.

As far as I remember the e5200 was a 200x12.5 multi so 233 should set you at a nice and cool 2.9ghz, then we could do some stress testing, look at temps and take it from there.

Most of the 4850s were great clockers as well and you should easily get it to around 4870 speeds.
