Do you often judge people in the workplace by what it says on the email signature then? :p

I'd say they are both equal.

It might not matter in the office, but it might matter when he applies for his next role.

I'd ask for the change it does sound like a more important role the way you want it named. This makes no difference in your current role but could be helpfull when moving on to your next job, an good job title will allow you to talk up your role and responsibilities when jumping up the food chain.

Manager of IT v Manager of support team in IT

Yes, I would judge. But then I've worked in lots of IT / IS environments that has those sorts of titles for different levels of people.

My new contract is for IT Support Manager, which I feel is pretty rubbish/un-important. I am going to ask about changing it to IT Systems Manager?

title is irrelevant, what you do, can do and what you can put on your CV that you did in the job are far more valuable.

Call it IT Chief Monkey. Stop being so obsessed with these job titles. Nobody outside of your department cares about what you are called.

Only if it is a small company. It is grading that you move from rather than title.

I could conceivably change my title as I wished (to a point) and no-one at my company would care.

You'll still be a Compaq monkey in my eyes! (Same as me really! :D)

Serioulsy though, i go through a job title a year (or so it feels!) in the 6yrs i've been at my place i've been anything from Assitant Director to Solution Specialist, all doing pretty much the same job. Get your secretary to field all your calls informing people of your importance and brilliance and only get her to let 1 in 10 people through to speak to you. That way you'll seem really busy and important......:p
