New IT Support Manager Job Title...

I think I am going to leave it as they have suggested it.

I am Assistant Network Manager now but as he is being made redundant they cant promote directly to that position. The redundancies were being made to save 20 hours (around half a week contracted time) from IT and media support.

Good point about future jobs IT Support Manager might not sound the same as Network Manager.

In the real world King of Restarts and changing passwords might be more appropriate.

I never really thought about job titles until I left my old place and was applying for new jobs. There is a worry when applying for new jobs that they will read your job title and that might have some weighting on your success. My old boss said I could either be:
The Director of Communications but only if I wrote it everywhere as The DIC
or
Network Security Analyst but only if I wrote it Anal-yst

The IT "It's very likely I'll be made redundant next" systems support manager :p

Made me think about this chav I met a few weeks ago on one of our sites. He somehow managed to fall into the position as SENIOR shift supervisor. I was speaking on the phone to the client and said something 'Yep, I'm here with the supervisor now' When he leaned over and said 'I'm a senior supervisor mate'. No mate, you're 'supervising' 20 foreigners digging holes, half who can't speak a word of the lingo. The most important decision you can make would be to announce the break times.

Ah, this country and their love of inane, worthless job titles. My current girlfriend almost chewed my ass off when I mentioned that's she's a secretary. She's an 'Executive Assistant' thank you very much.

When I went on a careers expedition about 2 years ago the guys from IT Support were batcrap crazy.

Probably what made me want to pick it as a future job xD

Might look better on a C.V. in the future if it doesn't have support in the title?

I look at what they did in the job rather than the title. As evidenced by this thread most people think titles are often pointless and inaccurate.

I can't speak for other employers however.

You control computer systems as an IT engineer so how about Information System Engineer?

Or Keith.

WTF! Its the IT Crowd in real life. Basement office!!!!

It's not the basement, it's on a busy pupil infested corridor. Server room is in the basement and is a nice little retreat.

Mr T, you should get Zol a cape for when he leaves! ZOLTAN AWAY!!!

Also, Systems Manager. Unless they're changing it so that you Manage the support team instead of Alex, you can't be Support Manager if he's managing you.
