Quick question as im about to invest in a new GPU!

Would you go for the
Asus ATI Radeon HD 6970 DirectCU II
or
Asus GeForce GTX 580 DirectCU II

Basically down the line im looking to add a 2nd card for XFX/SLi but as the price difference on them two cards is like ~£100 I'm wondering is there much performance difference...

Also I've been looking at the MSI GeForce GTX 580 OC Twin FrozR II.

Just looking for some input as to which gives best performance on current games (BC2/Crysis/Rift/Aion/WoW/BLops etc)

Thanks a lot :)

The 6970 is not as good as the gtx 480 never mind the 580 do a search for gpu chart

Belly rumbling!:p

Thanks for help everyone :)

Well after looking at my case this morning and my new PSU it seems Asus SLi 580s would never fit so im kinda left with the option of GTX 580 OC Twin FrozR II >.<

Which I know is a awesome card in it's self :)

Have to disagree with you on this, the 480 is on par with 6970 but not better.

The 480 is better value for money.

There are some incredibly strange results on there. An extra 60 odd fps in Civ 5? (can't remember exactly and cba to check again). You would expect them to be identical as civ is not gpu limited. Then in gpu limited games they come close to each other.

Makes no sense and suggests they are not done on the same test rigs so the benchmarks are meaningless.

Civ 5 benefits from multi threading at the GPU driver level, a DX11 feature which isn't supported currently on AMD/Catalyst as of yet. So that might explain the large gap.

I should imagine when more games supporting DX11 multithreading are released AMD/ATI will have a driver out that supports it.

I did wonder if it might be something on the nvidia cards like that. I see, seems like a good enough reason to go nvidia then if the two cards are so close. Personally I've always thought that nvidia drivers were significantly better than amd. But I've never actually had an amd card to back that statement up.

+1 MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II.

Pretty much run any games I chuck at it, I will grab another when bf3 comes out.

Why not look at 6950 CF? You don't need a ridiculous PSU (a good 750W would do), it's not much more than the GTX580s you're looking at, and will thrash it.

Obviously it's space/motherboard dependant, but it's the best performing option. Two of these if you have an extra slot between the cards.
