Just a heads up to any Dylan fans about a series of excellent radio shows on the BBC for his 70th birthday. If you have the time I'd recommend having a listen even if you're not really a fan as the programs are very accessible with a good mix of both stories and music. Spent a few hours listening through the life story series this afternoon and was really impressed.

Kris Kristofferson's 6 part series on the story of Dylan

Modern folk interpretations of The Freewheelin' - Thea Gilmore's version of Girl From the North Country is just beautiful

If i wanted to start listening to him, what album or compilation would you suggest i get?

If you want an excellent introduction then try The Essential Bob Dylan.

You really can't go wrong with these as a selection from his career:

Highway 61 Revisited
Blonde on Blonde
Blood on the Tracks
Time out of Mind

There are just so many good albums a few more to try:

The Freewheelin
Bringing It All Back Home
Slow Train Coming

Pretty much what simulatorman said.

Some people take a snobby view of compilations but The Essential Bob Dylan is a great place to start to get a feel for his music. For ease of defining early/old stuff there are a couple of trilogies that tend to get lumped together.

From his early music try the 1960s trilogy of:

Bringing It All Back Home
Highway 61 Revisited
Blonde on Blonde

And for the later music the late 90s/00s trilogy of:

Time Out of Mind
Love and Theft
Modern Times

Also Blood on the Tracks and The Freewheelin' for good measure.

If you want just one proper album to start with try Highway 61. Not necessarily the best but a good place to start.

I find it weird that 'Blond on Blonde' and 'Highway 61' are always the albums that people recommend for folks starting out with Dylan.

When I want to listen to Dylan, invariably I put on, 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' or 'Another Side of Bob Dylan'. 'Blood on the Tracks' is excellent too, but for me 'Blonde on Blonde' and 'Highway 61' just don't have the same gutsy edge to the earlier records.

Blood on the Tracks was the first album I got into but I've always thought of Highway 61 is an 'easier' place to start.

I adore Bob Dylan now, thankyou to people that told me get some of his albums!

This is by far my favorite song, and it just makes me want to start protesting the government lol!

Freewheeling is my favourite album i think... maybe... i think i need to listen to more albums more lol. What an epic artist though, still making music and touring 50 years later.

A bit gutted there wasn't more discussion of Dylan here... Has anyone else listened to the Bootleg Series? There's some really amazing Dylan on there as well.
