Hey all,

I'm currently with BT and get around a 6MB Connection...

If I max out that connection downloading - other people using the net in the house complain that the internet has slowed to a crawl, and so I'll have to either slow the download speed down or pause it :(

We want to switch to 50MB Virgin Broadband, and I was wondering...

If I max out the connection, will other people in the house still be affected and have slow internet?

Thanks,

Marky

yeah with any connection, u only have so much bandwidth, so if one pc is using it all, the others wont have any left to us.

50mb is just harder to max out than 8mb

Any chance you could speak in Noob English? :p

QoS = quality of service

You can set up your router to allow certain computers/services to use so much bandwidth but ensure there is enough left for others.

For example, you can set up 50% usage for yourself, and set up 50% shared between everyone else :D

and DD-WRT is just firmware you can install on some routers to allow you to use QoS if your current router/firmware doesn't support it :)

If you do decide to upgrade to Virgin 50mb, be sure to do research first. The combined modem and router that Virgin insist you use has a lot of problems. It's a case of when it's good, it's very good but when it's bad, it's aweful.

I have a Netgear DG834G - I'm assuming I'll be able to continue using it?

i know!
I had the separate Modem and DIR-615(with DD-WRT) and it was an awesome combo... and then my housemate spilled water on the modem which fried it, and we got the combination superhub instead :(

it's so bloody rubbish by comparison

LOL :D You should be a teacher :p Now that's teaching I can understand :p
You're welcome lol.

What's so bad about this superhub then?
I got one a month or so ago and the biggest problem I had was the WiFi quality which was terrible despite only having a thin plaster wall between my computer and the SuperHub. I got a couple of Belkin 200m Homeplugs a few days ago and they're so much better than WiFi, connection quality is absolutely perfect, absolutely *no* additional lag on Counterstrike Source :D

Also turned 'IP Flood Detection' off on the router (log into router > 'Advanced Settings' > 'Services' page) as per recommendation on the web but haven't noticed anything change tbh.

Do Netgear make a cable router?

I only ask because I've had my current Netgear router for about four years now and not had one problem with it! :)

the virgin superhub is a netgear ;)

adsl routers are basically routers with adsl modems built in.
what u need is one without the modem
plenty of different versions, and netgear make them as well

i've not had any problems with my superhub, but i only use it as a modem and have a pfsense router

good luck maxing out the connection

Nothing short of the torrents is usually capable of it. Most websites need multiple connections to use all of your 50 meg I find.

I use Newsgroups so I assume this will max out my connection?

Oh I see...

Maybe I'll just use the Superhub and see how it goes and then if I don't like it, I'll get a proper router :p

Have you got DGTeam firmware on the DG834 Marky?

Try setting QoS with that before ordering the Virgin package, to give yourself an idea of how it works :)
