New BMW 3 Series 'Performance Edition'

didn't audi do this with their le mans edition a4s? all 2.0tdis or something equally crap?

Yes but they rammed them full of equipment, it was more or less the same as the BMW Business Edition. These Performance Edition cars are as low spec as it gets.

They're making a what now?! BMW have been making me very sad lately :( Do you guys think this will sell at all? Do we know how many they are going to ship out?

Of course it will, excellent pub fodder.

"Yeah mate, it's the performance edition, specially tuned, basically as fast as an M3"

Customers will lap them up

I think the real reason for the name is for the Olympic tie in - ie, the Olympics is a celebration of performance, therefore the olympic edition is called the Performance Edition.

I said I would ask - and i did.. Sorry it's ages after the thread started.

It's to do with the 2011 Olympics being the most 'sustainable' ever.

They couldn't use the 'Olympic' tag without gaining approval through process.

Therefore this BMW is another Efficient Dynamics model and 'Performance' in its emissions class?? Or something like that.. I lost interest when he said it wasn't in their interest to bring out an Olympic 'M' car.

I wonder if you'll be able to buy the stickers from the Parts Dept? ;)

Might be able to use the Olympic lanes if you can :D

Ha ha. I saw this the other day and checked out the performance cars further and remember thinking 'oh hell is that it'.

Yes it's marketing and I should have expected it anyway. Lets face it, nearly every BMW model has a performance model right? Yes, you buy the next level up (ie,a 325' instead of a 320i) at the cost of a few £££'s more. Problem is, we're still short of cash and generally these days people expect something for nothing, ie, not have to pay much more for it. So you offer them 'performance' for the bear minimum extra cost. So I think people will go for it, those who cannot afford a better base model to start with.

Ahhh must have been a miss-communication.

It's the 318i PE which someone wrongly assumed was Performance Edition. It's actually supposed to be Physical Education.

At the end of the day, the 'M' drivers know there is only one real M car for whatever series they are buying (And yes, i know there are 3 variations of the M3 before anyone mentions ;) - still a different series number though).

The 'M Sport' or 'AMG Style' add ons are just for the masses to quibble over, and think they have anything vaguely related to the proper cars they can't or wont buy.

In fact, you could argue that trim levels are just for the price conscious lower end of the market anyways (options aside).

I don't see the harm in what BMW are doing.
