fsi*, a - b in resonable comfort, £5/6k ones will be 04 - 06
The Mk5 diesels are pretty bulletproof as they are unit injector (PD) rather than common rail. I'd certainly take one over the 1.6 or 2.0 FSI. Pick of the bunch is the 2.0 140. Avoid the 170 as it has trick injectors that have questionable reliability and cost over £400 each.

Not quite - an 04-06 Golf will be an FSI not TSI, it is simply a direct injection petrol engine with no form of forced induction.
the early mk5s have fsi engines. 1.4 1.6 and 2.0, same for the a3's though there isnt a 1.4
Going by the initial criteria, the ones the OP refers to aren't the turbo'd variants. afaik there is no 1.6 tsi, though there are 1.4 tsi's which do not fall within the price bracket the op has mentioned.
