Ok, this is the deal.

I don't need my car, but I need money at the moment. I am thinking about SORNing my car and cancelling the insurance for a few month at least. However, what will this mean in terms of NCB when I come to re insure the car again? My insurance was from about November last year, so I have the proof of 5 years NCB from then, but how long untill insurers don't recognise NCB when you haven't had a policy?

Some insurers allow you to suspend your policy rather than cancel it. I suspended mine when I went to Australia, they sent me a cheque for the value of the insurance cover for the time period I suspended it for. I still gained NCB as well.

Ah, cool. I assume your still with Admiral (I'm with Bell) so it might be a possibility for me to suspend my insurance for a few months... I'll give them a call.

Totally did not think to check this when I went away for 6 months. Suspension + NCB gain + refund for the time period would have been welcomed. A good £300.

No doubt my insurer would have said "We don't do that" though :D

Bells suspension bumph is written around you selling a car, being without one for a while, then buying another, all before your policy should expire. I assume I would just follow that same process, but just be re insuring the same car after a few months. Think this is the best way. Cheers Fox.
