Online RTS gaming - do you care about ruining stranger's games?

So We start playing a 4v4 on company of heroes yesterday.

Then, after about 20 minutes, with neither side winning .. someone just disconnects. Just gone. It was in the middle of a amazing close knit battle .. and neither side was really winning - really exciting close game.

From this point, the game was so misaligned, the other team won quite rapidly, but my point is the rest of the 7 people didn't have that good a time. The whole thing was frankly ruined - and there was little point in us all spending the last 20 minutes building our forces etc. It was one big wasta' time.

For longer-term RTS games, if playing with total strangers on the internet, do you think players should feel some kind of obligation to try and stay in the game - or the second you don't fancy it, even on a whim for no reason whatsoever, insta-quit and 'screw how much the rest were enjoying the close battle, who cares, I don't even know them so screw them I'm watching youtube now I just decided ..'??

Unfortunately the online world is one with no faces and few consiquences.
Although many of us would think it a bit, umm... 'dishonorable'?, the majority of people out there don't care as it won't effect them in the slightest when only playing with strangers.

The only way to get around it really is to play only with those you know or recognise to be reliable. The problem is that's often not an option.

They could have disconnected and it not be their fault.

Most people leave if the game is being ruined/raging/just joined to ruin the game in the first place. If it was as good a game as you say, they probs wouldn't have just left.

That being said I do hate it when people do that sort of thing, it really does just.....hold on found an awesome new channel on youtube, I'll finish my reply later :p

Hard to say really without knowing why the guy disconnected, could be something out of his control for instance, could be his internet connection died. Could be that his kid cut themselves on something and he dashed off immediately to attend to them, could be he had a power cut or a heart attack. Could be anything really I guess.

Myself, whenever I do something that I know is going to take a while (like a dungeon run in an MMO), I ensure that I have enough time to do it. Having said that, if something in real life cropped up , I wouldnt hesitate to switch off and attend to that as its more important. I'd try and say that I'm sorry and need to go, but it would depend upon the nature of the thing I was switching off for, situation depending then I could well just turn off.

I'd expect you were in some kind of pub match? Could be any number of reasons why a player disconnects, from rage quitting to their internet cutting out or the baby being sick and needing attention staight away. Tbh on pub matches I wouldn't think twice to d/c if I had to. I doubt a clan type player would be able to pull that kind of stunt.

That said, if I know I might need to quit a game in a moment's notice, I just won't start something that requires group player time invested. I like to play Rift but can't play for more than 15 minutes at a time due of r/l commitments, so no dungeon crawls here :(

It's disappointing, sure, but what can you do, eh?

I've played this at a friend's house a few times, and it seems like a great game. If I end up buying it, I'll give you a shout. I insist on staying until the bitter end :D

Agree with Tombstone. If something comes up, I'd apologise unless the fate of the world depended on me leaving immediately.

I don't think I've played many 4v4's on CoH where someone hasn't disconnected during the game, most are probably genuine internet dc's.

I have seen it loads of times where a person starts to get pushed back or lose a lot of units they will just rage quit, but yeah its a pub game so it's to be expected.

If I see I have no way of pulling back the game in a 1v1 match I will leave the game as a forfeit.

But no matter how I'm doing I would always stick around until the end of team games, this guy was a ***.

I don't agree with majority. As with most things, the majority are decent. After all...only one of eight quit. A sizeable minority is plenty enough to ensure this kind of thing is all too common though.

Can someone who has lost connection rejoin a game in multiplayer CoH?

Unfortunately its just one of those things that happens in RTS's, especially against unknown people. Whether it be a genuine connection problem, real-life issue or just somebody rage quitting/trying to avoid a loss.

Personally I like trying to stay in the game as long as possible, I've had some cracking 1v1s in CoH where I was all but beat but made some stunning comeback and won.

If you can find a group of players to regularly play with/against, then you know what to expect. And then you can start messing around with oddball strats and stuff with them, enjoy the game more :)

I was having a brill 2vs2 on SC2 last week and we were just about turning the tide on that game, suddenly my connection goes bonkers.

Oh well .. :(

Give people some credit - I don't think anyone tries to screw other people over. You don't start a game unless you think you can finish it.

But... you can't always control that. For example if you're 12 and your mum unplugs the PC to do the vacuuming. You could list hundreds of genuine scenarios like this - that's why people leave unexpectedly.

Thing is, it could be their internet died, or someone kicked the router and it exploded... or their PC conked, or the application experienced a fatal error and needed to close... or little jimmy needed his dinner and his mommy wouldn't wait another 10 mins.... :p

So nothing has ever happened to you that you've just had to drop what you were playing and run?

Obviously no kids / girlfriend / life to speak of.

I have a life, I just make sure that for the next however long I'm going to have no interruptions.
